Four candles...

I'm currently staying in Monticello, Utah, and would say the Four Corners area is a great jumping off point for loads of good dirt and road riding!

To the north you have Moab, and all the red rock and canyon vistas you could ever want... to the east some of the best mountain riding in Colorado (although there is rather too much snow at this time of year of course)... to the south east there is some great desert riding in the top corner of New Mexico, and if you venture further south, the area around Silver City NM is fantastic too - both for trails and some awesome mountain highways!

Due west of Monticello and Blanding in southern Utah there is some excellent riding too - some real long distance dirt roads and dozens of side trails, plus some beautiful paved back road byways too. I'll be heading across the top of Lake Powell/Glen Canyon area in the next couple of days on my way back to Nevada...

Are you going to go through Monument Valley, too? Canyon de Chelly is worth seeing, too...

Hi yuma simon - I wasn't going to head that far south this time, but I've just had a look at the map and see what you mean - looks cool!

I really need to come back to this region a little later in the year - at the moment anything over 8000ft is still covered with snow, or at least drifts on the roads/trails... I've had to turn back a couple of times these past few days, but fortunately have been rewarded with an equal if not better route to where I wanted to go - there is just so much here!

In that case, I'd follow the TAT (Trans-Am Trail) route through Arkansas (pretty) and Oklahoma (flat) and wind up in Moab Utah for a few days, exploring the area around there - you won't get bored x
