World Wide GPS Coordinates

Some months ago, I was trying to figure out how I was going to carry all the data I needed with regards to locations on my world trip. I knew of the Calle website (http://www.calle.com/world) which contains just about any place name on this blue spot, except for places in the US. The US is no big deal (you can use MS MapPoint), but to find exactly where Mahaxai is in Laos, you need things a bit more advanced.
I was able to burn a CD from the Calle website with all this info at a summary level (excluding the maps and underlying pages), around 560 Megs in all, or about 2.9 million place names world wide. The beauty is that each place name has a latitude and longitude. I can take the CD with me, as well as keep a data copy on my laptop (also coming on the trip). It works really sweet. Here’s a link to a demo on my website:

I am not sure if I am doing anything illegal by copying this and using it for my own use or not. Anyone have an opinion?

Thanks,
Kevin

How did you do that????????
I have been getting really frustratet recently by long time it can take to load a page on the calle website (I am talking about + 5 minutes and so). Since I needed quite a bit of info I decided I would just download the part about Marocco... I stopped it after a day and night! So...
How did you do this?

(Could you sent a copy of your message to my mailbox? I'll be a while off line and might have forgotten about this by then. Thanks.)

Fireboomer, you might have better luck with GEOnet Names Server
( http://www.nima.mil/gns/html/index.html ). It's basically the same GNDB (Geoghraphic Names DataBase).

AB,

Looks like a good site with all the info needed. I manage to download all the files in txt format.
The smaller countries I can import easely into an Exell spreadsheet.
But the bigger countries create a problem (Norway for ex). I can only import upto 65000 lines in Exell.
When I want to restart the importing proces from the point were it stopped it is refusing to do this.

Anybody else who downloaded these? How do you look at them / use them?

I downloaded the Calle.com website, or at least all the country info. I've done it to such an extent that I have lat and lon for everyhting on the website, but not the pictures. There's a sample on my website. The whole thing is about 650 meg, burnt to a CD.

Kevin,

Can copy past those coordinates?
That's what I would like to find. A sort of list in wich you can look up na location and then copy paste the coordinates into a list of waypoints that is your route.

Pieter,

Pieter, sorry, to your first question ... Yes, you can copy and paste the coordinates to a list and then upload them to a GPS. I've written a srcipt to "strip" the coordinates and the names out of the pages and prepare a txt file or csv. I still need to work on it a bit more.

Kevin,

Bedankt voor al de info.
Or in other words: Thanks for all the info.

You can also just download the coutnries you need. For Denemark it took me about 2 hours to get the result you are talking about (the list of cities and in the bottom the link with the exact coordinates).

The script you've written is for Internet Explorer?
I have no experiences with that. More to learn ???? :-)

Pieter.

How many cities and towns are you getting though? The Calle site has 2.9 million towns. No way to get that in Excel, unless you're doubling up rows, but even then ...

HI Kberetta!

I'v downloaded coordinates from NIMA gns,for Serbia&Montenegro and Algeria for a start, couse i have a dial-up,i'm going to go internet cafe where thay have cable conection with 15-20KB/sec(I only got 3-4KB/sec)
On NIMA you download a one file per country, zip'd file of Yugoslavia is aprox 2,2MB for download, more when unziped in txt format, and when i'v paste it to excel and save a document it's 17MB total.
And that's for aprox. 52000 places for Yugoslavia.
So I make a one excel document for each country,it work'd fine.

BDW,why NIMA files dont have an info for elevation?

cheers

jondoe
