Wierd problem with Garmin 2610 - HELP !!

I have a Garmin 2610. It works great with my garmin maps etc in Europe.

Now, I have T4A maps on a card and also OSM maps on another card. I'm currently in Africa.

Now, with no CF card inserted, I pick up LOADS of satellites no problem but as soon as I put a card in, the satellites all drop off. Literally within a minute I have none and no reception. . I take the card out and instantly they all come back on but im stuck using basemap !!

It seems that if im running the basemap I get loads of sats but any other non garmin detail maps and I get nothing !!

Any ideas ????? Im lost (literally lol)

Did it work with the cards in when you tested it in the UK before you left?

CF cards

Is it a large size card? Does it contain a large map file (more than you need)
I noticed that when you put big cards with big files in, the calculating power of the Garmin becomes compromised in some types. Also not all size cards are supported. Should in any case prevent to put in bigger than 4Gb cards, unless Garmin says you can. To figure out the satelites and calculate the position, the GPS needs its CPU power which could be drained by too big a map file. Maybe try removing all excess maps and only load the minimum of the area where you are. See what happens.

Cheers,
Noel

The cards are 2gb Cf cards. The same cards iv used countless times with the garmin maps. The maps are actually WAY smaller than the europe maps iv've been using.

I just dont understand why a mapset would make the satellites simply dissapear.

Sometimes, I would get a letter "D" over the signal bars before they dissapeared.

Ted, this may be way off but I've got an even older Garmin GPS2+ and some years ago when I started getting weird stuff on the screen it turned out that the firmware was corrupted.

My one is so old that it doesn't take cards but when you switched it on some of the data was available, some not. Then it started losing satellites - just odd stuff.

The fix was easy. Download new firmware from the Garmin site and stuff it in (it came with instructions) It's been fine since.

It was the card !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny though. I bought this BRAND NEW card only recently and it was actually sold AS a Garmin 2610 card although generic.

The maps would loads to it no problem, view on the unit but just kill the sats.

The D's are good! They mean that you are using WAAS (or the EU equivalent) in addition to the raw satellite signal and are a means to improve the accuracy of your location. I think it works by the ground stations broadcasting their (known) locations which the satellites in turn use to improve their reckoning.

It's not *quite* as good as getting the full military spec. signal :-)

Cheers,

Ian
