Wanderlust Map (Smellybiker.com) Vs Garmin World Map

Dear All

Has anyone had good experience of either of these formats? Ive tried downloading the evaluation file but had no joy opening , so I am reluctant to purchase the complete file.

Any opinions welcome, thanks Stu

I've used both and wanderlust is way better - in fact wanderlust covers countries that aren't even on the Garmin base maps. Although you can't navigate turn by turn you do have a reasonably accurate map in your hand and you will always know where you are. I used wanderlust all arrund Syria and Jordan and thought it was just great.

I'd go for smellybiker as he's one of us, developing on the road as he goes. I met him in Colombia and he's always adding in the more out of the way roads. Lets stick together is all I'd say, but I am biased.

Iain.

That is a worry.

Opening with mapsource? Installed in the default location? He has a web site to deal with these types of issues .. might be better off there ..

Thank you gentleman, all done and appears to be working well.

stupid

Hello people,

I'm planning my first big trip next year and am nosing around here for information.
For one i'm looking for a navigationdevice, now maby i'm stupid but what's a wanderlust?

pbekkerh 25 Sep 2008 21:51

I looked around the site and it looked interesting but I couldn't find any information about coverage of the world map. It just says "the world" and even downloading the evaluation, you only get some of the maps.

Is there anywhere on the site examples and coverage information ?

Umm it covers the 'world' as in the planet .. earth .. Why do I think of the skit with the dead parrot? I'd think the coverage might be poor for the North and South Poles .. but most places would have some coverage ...

The 'Wandrelust World Map' is in Garmin Mapsource format .. if you have Garmins Mapsource program and install the sample version you can see half the world - the other half is blank so you won't be tempeted not the pay for the reast. The sample version shows the level of detail and accuracy you can expect in the complete version..

If you chose to go with Garmins Mapsource program that will restict you to using Garmins GPSes ..

I'm using the Garmin Routable World Base Map, available FREE - check out www.zumoforums for instructions on downloading it. It gives distances and "Main Road" routes for every country I have used it in so far. I am on the road in India travelling from Europe to Australia. One of the guys who was riding with me had the Smellybiker maps but had absolutely no more information on his GPS than I did. I have been told that Smellybiker maps are far more comprehensive for South America though.

Maps are still much better than GPS for me.

Kenny

HAHAHA!
I have f.x. the Garmin World map, but try to look at Tibet(there is not much there) and zoom in on Iceland and you get "sorry no data for this zoomlevel" and I had to make my own maps for Tuamotu Islands. On the other hand, did I use the world map in Morocco and the coverage was fully useable.

So I would still like to know, then lets say HOW does the smelly map cover the owrld.

I would like to know about Tibet, Laos, China, Greenland, Easter Island, Galapagos

beddhist 26 Sep 2008 17:54

Tibet and Laos: the current version 1.6 has the same or less detail than Garmin's WM. However, the beta of 2.0 has a lot more and the detail will be even better when peoples' updates (mine! :-) are incorporated. Bob, Frank, myself and hopefully others are working on it.

Meanwhile, you can download my tracks and use them as roads: beddha.free.fr/GPS.

In Tibet maps are hardly an issue, since you need a guide.

smellybiker maps

I tried the trail version of smellybikers map and worked fine. Thus I have purchased smellybikers membership for access to maps but am having problems getting the maps to load into Mapsource. I have posted a query on the smellybiker froum to no avail. Anybody that can help me??

*Touring Ted* 29 Nov 2010 15:28

I bought the smelly biker maps !

The South America ones are just stolen/borrowed/aquired from the VERY cheap "Mapear" SA maps and the other free ones.

Smelly biker maps for Africa are totally SH*TE. It reverts to basemap most of the time.

Check out OSM maps. They are FREE and VERY VERY good ! In Africa anyway.

Where are you going anyway ???

Interesting info over on this thread, which includes OpenStreetMap.org & SmellyBiker's Wanderlust maps in a research comparison. Some top work done and detailed in this thread by Hubber "apapadop" who deserves credit for his efforts .. :thumbup1:

no luck with smellybiker maps

I am going to Central America/Mexico. So trying to find a source of maps that will work wioth Garmin MS. I have loaded the Smellybioker maps into the Garmin directory but they still can not be found in MS. I have tried to contact Bob through the smellybiker forum but do not get an answer. I am getting anxious as I am planning on leaving in January. Any help is appreciated. I have a Colorado 450. I certainly admit to being a newby to GPS...

beddhist 1 Dec 2010 10:24

So you have successfully installed the trial version and it shows up in MS in the drop-down list at the top left of the screen? Have un-installed the trial version before installing the full version?

What maps do you see in the menu?

What version of MS do you have?
