About Garmin 60csx

Hi, soon i will visit Africa and i would like to ask from people with experience if 60csx will be a good choice. They say that it has basic global map. What else i will need to add? I need only for Africa from Morocco to Gambia.

Hey Lock,

I used a 60cs through Africa, works perfectly fine. Attach with a Ram mount and you are good to go. The smellybiker map for east coast Africa works well, should be fine for west as well. Happy riding.

I also use a 60CSx, is a good unit.
I have got SmellyBiker, but not used yet.
Another option for this area is the South African based maps from Tracks4Africa.
Tracks4Africa - Mapping Africa, one day at a time
Very low price for Euro or Dollar based people.

If I were you I'd get SmellyBiker on one SD card and Tracks4Africa on another and you can try both.
Unless you have a computer with you.
Or else maybe you can add both maps at once: not sure but you can try.

Hi,

if you haven't bought it yet, you might safe a couple of $$ and go for a 60cx, same gps features without the compass and barometer. I carry a little spare compass separate, just in case. technology can fail. Although the 60c(s)x series usually don't.

I heard the CSX is a VAST improvement over the CS. Not in features, but the chipset is much faster as is the accuracy and the amount of satalites it can pick up.

Then again, I got along fine with an ancient 2610 until the screen started delaminating !

You can use several different map sets at once: in the map setup screen you can turn map tiles on and off. Some will display simultaneously anyway, some won't. While there I also suggest you turn off the useless marine basemap.

they both use the same chipset and antenna, so it would supprise me if there's any difference in reception etc.

My mistake.. It was the Reciever in the CS that was the major let down...

there are many posting about 60csx in navigation-maps-compass- gps section. i personally own 60 csx and it is just perfect. worth the money.

In my case the CSx was on sale at REI.
But it's still a great unit even if it did cost a bit more.

Anyone have an idea on the maximum size SD memory card that it can take?
I've put in a 4GB and also a 8GB but I don't know if it actually accesses the 8 GB.
It's more for a long trip where you wanted to load lots of maps without recourse to a computer/Mapsource.
i think the number of waypoints is limited anyways.
But if not 4 GB is pretty big.
I loaded all of the Europe Garmin maps (3GB) and still have some space.

You could always just swap cards ! Not ideal I know but it works.

1) Garmin confirm 4GB is the max the 60csx can access provided you have the latest unit software update.

2)1000 waypoints are available on the 60CSX.
SOLUTION: If you need more, may I suggest you convert your waypoints to Custom POI's I currently have over a quarter of a million of my own loaded that way and they weigh nothing! and that leaves all the unit's 1000 waypoint capability free for those you take on-the-road You create your own files- group the same type of POI's together (I did per country) so you can associate one icon to each file.
(Garmin offers the free POI loader software on their website)
TIP: keep some space free on the micro SD card and set your unit to record tracks (if you want to keep these) directly to the card.

I do not know if Ted means you can swop cards with other people- Remember that when you unlock mapping, it is unlocked to your GPS only and will not work on someone else's GPS as theirs will have a different code.

You can upload different maps onto the same SD card - like Smellybiker's , Tracks for Africa etc and tick or untick them from your unit.

hi WarthogARJ,
theres an option to save tracklogs to the sd card, also make sure you save your trackklogs in time to your sdcard, before 100%, because it will be overwritten.

The waypoints are stored in internal memory, i think max. 500, not sure.

I mean you could have Wanderlust maps on one card, garmins Europe on another, trans4africas on another etc etc !!
