Using Nokia Navigator for GPS

Is the Nokia Navigator sufficient as a GPS for a ride from LA to Argentina? My friend has one and it's very good for getting around town but everyone seems to use Garmin for their rides, how come? I am considering purchasing one as I believe it would be a good way to travel a bit lighter, maybe use a car charger to charge it off the bike battery too (is it hard to hook up a 12v cigarette lighter?).

The other model I was considering is a bit more, it's the N82 which boasts a 5MP camera, how do these stack up against a standalone digital camera for about $300AUD/$280USD ?

Also am I likely to make it across Central/South America carrying my eeepc, mobile phone and ipod without it being stolen? Anyone have some tips & tricks where to hide your stuff when booked into a hostel / hotel? I'm especially worried about staying in dorms :confused1:

Hi, I use a 6110 Navigator on my GS, with a Brodit holder, hooked up to a BMW charging socket, it works great, NAV phone, camera, video and mp3 all in one, less things to lose imho. Mint

I've just noticed this topic so apologies if it's too late.

I use a Nokia N73 with Navigator 6 and a Holox GPS receiver bought on eBay.

Works fine in Europe and GPS receiver does not need a clear line of sight to the sky and can be stored in your pocket, tankbag, under you seat, etc. Battery life is acceptable for short trips round town though I've used emergency phone chargers to prolong it to a full day of riding. Battery life of the phone itself is fairly poor when running the software so it will need to be run from a power socket on the bike. The screen is obviously very small but I just put it in my tankbag and go off spoken instructions only. Keeps it discreet and so you can leave it on the bike when you go into fuel stations to pay, etc.

I also have a HTC PDA running the same software as a back up.

If you already have a phone with the Symbian or Windows Mobile operating systems, this software can be found on various bitorrent websites though this would of course be for evaluation purposes only before buying the official product.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
