translate Cyrillic-language maps?
 

i just bought my Russian 1:1mil maps of Libya. any suggestions on the best and easiest way to translate them into english?

Cannot help you with the “best and easy”, but here is what I do as I use these maps all the time in Egypt. I have them scanned and loaded in TTQV, which has the nice feature of built in visual Russian language translator. You type in each location name you want to translate on a Russian screen keyboard and it gives you the name pronunciation in English. Note that most likely the resulting name will still be Arabic location name but written in English pronunciation converted from Russian pronunciation, in other words it won’t make much sense for non Arab speakers but it’s a very good start. This double conversion sometimes throws the names completely, Arabic is my mother tongue and sometimes I go “what the heck…..” http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

If you only want to do the translation and you are not interested in the navigation software itself, then download the trial version, which will work indefinitely but with no GPS support. Hope this helps.

If you email me I can email you a scan of the russian alphabet a friend did for me to navigate through russia which will make your life a little easier. Some names you can guesss on cyrillics but other are unintelligable unless you know the alphabet
