Tork tool for Tourtech mounts
 

I lost the little tork screwdriver to lock down my GPS on the mount. I've been using a knife point to screw it down. A regular tork screwdriver won't work because the tourtech has bar across it to defeat the use of a regular tork tool. I've been gouging it open and closed with a knife...... I know. It's not much to complain about. Does anyone know where I can get another one. I've tried different dealers and haven't gotten a response.

Thanks Dave. I spelled it wrong. The problem with the Tourtech mount for my Garmin is one small unremovable torx style screw which Tourtech has sabotaged by placing (molding, machining) a bar? line? slot? impression across the center hole so a standard torx cannot be inserted. Only the one that came with the unit will fit. I guess this is their "anti theft device". Instead of "Torx", I call it "dorks". It was definitly a "dork" who messed with the tork. Anyway, I'm sure there are others who have lost this "thing" and have laid awake at night wondering if somewhere, in a remote corner of the Tourtech factory, there is an old shoebox with a mouldy sandwich on top of it, and inside this dusty old box are THREE THOUSAND DORKS!!!!!!, I mean Torx. I've said "Screw it" and not screwed it (I mean Torx it) sorry I meant dorked it downed and this led to, upon hitting a bump, the Garmin unit being ejected from the mount and swinging from the power cable......twice.......or was it three times....???? Anyway, gotta go,,,, the nurse is coming to tighten my straps and give me my medication..........

Well Smitty, one of those tools (Dork, dorx, tork, torque, torx with a security slant on it) must fit - you probably know that the newer BMWs have similar torx heads in use, so I guess it is a German thing (i.e. Touratech as well). The BMW ones on the F650 are not secure though: a standard Torx!

Strange really, but the anti-theft "secure" versions of the tools are as available on ebay as any other version of the Torx headed tools - not so secure then!

thats a security torx head, not a standard torx. the tool must have a little hole down the centre. get a set of security bits and they should fit. its so you cant easily undo them, as you're finding out!

the good news is that security bits work on standard heads (but not the other way round) so you only need the one set.

or a cheaper option would be to replace the screw with a standard headed torx, phillips, slot, socket etc screw

It's a Tourtech thing. Upon closer inspection, the "screw" has a normal slot ( I guess you could say "starlike" shaped) in which you insert the torx screwdriver to twist it tight or loosen it. The exception is this. The "screw" has a tiny "pin" in the middle of it. The tourtech torx (that I lost) looks like a regular torx but it has a tiny "hole" to accept the pin in screw. If you stick a regular torx into it, the pin in the "screw" prevents to torx from being inserted. I bought standard torx and they don't fit. The torx system they call "secure" (maybe it was for a week or two when they first started using it twenty years ago) is like the proverbial auto theft alarm going off in a parking lot that no one pays any attention to. I was unaware that the little Tourtech tool had this feature until I lost it and bought a standard torx of the same size and "wondered why the stupid thing wouldn't fit". I just wish Tourtech would have taped a message on it "Warning, don't lose this stupid little item or you'll be sorry......The Management"....O.K....I'm gonna go drink a beer now.

No! Don't use a punch, it will ruin a dork headed screw/bolt, especially with a big lump hammer behind it! :rolleyes2::rolleyes2:

i hate fasteners.

the worst one ever invented is a french thing called a "tri-wing", you can still get them for security applications but the lynx helicopter used to be put together with them. they look like phillips but with only 3 slots. when they are new they go in lovely, using the right size bit (5 different sizes!) but try to take one of the bastards out! the angle on the 3 slots makes the screwdriver grip better the tighter you do it up, fantastic, but it has the opposite effect for undoing. add to that a rusted in screw and slots full of paint, and i mustve had to saw slots in thousands of these in my time!
