T4A Maps and Forum

Has anybody any knowledge or is a member of the Tracks4Africa group, the site (http://www.tracks4africa.co.za/) also talks about the T4A Maps Pro 6.03 software designed solely for African travel which sounds quite detailed. If anybody has used it what was your view on it please.

You can download an old version and see what it does for you. There are also samples of the pro version on the site. Note very little of Morocco done, mostly southern Africa (SA mainly with Namibia and up to Victoria Falls ... )

There is also an Australian version 'Tracks 4 Australia'. Same kind of thing. Whish there were more of these things going on - Asia would be nice.

The basic idea is everyone contributes their tracks - a compilation is made to improve the accuracy and the results are available to the contributors. Fine if you are a local - bit more difficult where you’re on a different continent but want to plan your travel there.

Talking GPS tracks requested

We are already requesting submissions for the world for HU. Already started in very rough form - will be much more sophisticated and complete later this year, but we might as well start collecting tracks now..

See here http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tri...utes/index.php

and note links on right as well for GPS tracks.

Ummm the link on the right under planing leads to the same link you have above.

As for GPS tracks ... I would rather not have the work done on/in Tracks4Africa or Tracks 4 Australia duplicated ... ?

Links -
Tracks 4 Africa www.tracks4africa.com/
Tracks4Australia http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tracks4australia/

They both use Yahoo Groups for membership and give out the latest data to people who contribute data ..

T4A is a great resource. They also have a very active email based BB. I use one of the older free maps on my GPSIII+ and laptop and I find them invaluable.

Although they do go all the way from Cape to Cairo they also do Morrocco but are very light in between. As they are created by real travellers recording their routes, they also contain a great deal of extra info, camp sites fuel sites etc, Points of interest etc.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
