SE Asia Maps (Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand & Indonesia)

Hi

SE Asia Maps (Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand & Indonesia)

We are just about to ship to Malaysia from India, we are currently using openstreet maps on our garmin, i was wondering if any one had experience of using them in SE Asia ?

Are there any better alternatives?

Many thanks

Martin & Nicole

Hi Martin & Nicole,

While in Malaysia we have been using Malfreemaps, far better than the Garmin ones and its is free.

Peter Hendricks - forum screen name 'beddhist' - started a useful thread on this subject (and geographical region) last year. Here's the link: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...min-maps-49645

All the best

Also how are roads on the two islands, were travelling in a 4x4 ?

Many thanks

Hi Martin,

We used a RORO from Pontianak, Indonesian Borneo to Semarang in Java, to get to Borneo in the first place we came from Parepare in Sulawesi to Nunukan however the rest for you would be impossible we had to put the bikes on a speed boat to take them over to Tawau in Malaysian Borneo.

We rode from Tauau anti - clockwise all the way round to Pontianak, you will have no problems doing that, but as for the full loop is not impossible depends on the time of the year and how brave you are, but not something that we would have done.

The roads in Malaysian Borneo are ok, as for Kalimantan part we only really rode to Pontianak, so typical Indonesian roads still a shock after Malaysian ones.

As for Sulawesi we went only a bit further North than Rantepao, some of the roads further north at the time we was there May 2009 (due to landslides) were impassable for anything but motorbikes, apart from that the roads are not too bad.

Regards
Ann

The OSM map is getting pretty good in Thailand now. However, there are still highways missing or mis-labelled, so please contribute updates to the project when you find errors or missing roads.

I started a Google spreadsheet with Indonesia ferries, as info about them can be hard to come by. It's in a topic elsewhere.

Last I checked the Navigasi map showed a road crossing Indonesian Borneo from W to E. I have no idea whether it actually exists and what condition it is in. It could be a logging track... There may or may not be a ferry going to Sulawesi from Borneo. There IS a car ferry from Labuanbajo.
