scratches on GPS screen

after a couple of years use my quest has got quite a scratched screen now, not deeply scratched but 'well used', like they do.
will i damage it by polishing it with a fine plastic polish?

then protect it with one of those PDA/ipod screen protectors i guess

The clear screen protector is ment to fill in small scratches so just clean and put on a screen protector.
My 2610 is very badly scratched after the protective cover broke up and fell off. I used sellotape as an emergancy but water gets under it, have now got the clear screen protector from jessops but not had any heavy rain as yet.
When the unit is switched on you dont notice the scratches.

You could try polishing out the scratches with Brasso. Obviously try on a small portion first...

Matt :)

try toothpaste

My 172 was in a right old state too so I rubbed it with toothpaste a few times. Looks much clearer now now and smells great too.

I've since got into that plastic stick-on sheet for my GPS/camera screen etc.
Invisible shield is the well known one, I went for other brand.

cheers guys, the local carphone warehouse does packs of 5 of these protector things so i'll give it a go before attacking the screen with polish.

chris, try toothpaste on aluminium bits, they come up a treat but toothpaste is actually quite a rough abrasive, (ever wondered why dentists like us to use so much of it?) i was thinking more along the lines of a proper plastic cream polish you use on CDs

Umm .. what I was told a long time ago - from coarse to fine

Brasso
Silvo
Toothpaste
Talk powder...

Used for polishing quarts crystals .. to get the correct frequency.

we're not allowed to use it on aircraft windows cos its too rough, we have to use a product called micromesh that comes in progressively finer grits of al oxide (down to 12,000grit which feels like rubber sheet) then finish with a polishing creme.

perhaps its something to do with the hardness of what your polishing? quartz i guess is very hard, acrylic and perspex is quite soft

DAVSATO 30 Jul 2008 19:23

done it now, acrylic plastic polish did the job
