Russian 1:500000 Africa maps

Would purchasing these on DVD and then getting hard copies printed out for for example an African west coast route be cheaper than just buying A LOT of maps from Stanfords? I know that depends how winding a route you were to pick, or how much exploring you may end up doing (rather than assuming you will stick to plan A and only need Plan A's maps), but a ball park £?

Having spoken to a uk printers about producing hard copies, they said a large cost could be leaving them to fiddle with every file so the printout comes out to fit the chosen papersize and to scale depending on the state of the info. These Russian maps are described for instance from one expensive vendor as West Africa on over 180 sheets, so could someone tell me if a sheet would fit unfiddled on say A1 at 1:500000?

Or how easy are they to fiddle with? I seem to remember reading Mr Scott saying he printed some Morocco areas out on A3?

I don't really want to rely entirely on GPS.

Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree, and only need one of the Atlas's that cover all of Africa in one handy volume? ;)

All advice gratefully received :)

J
you might want to combine both?
There are the T4 Maps for Africa that you can integrate in mapsource then print- this could be a cheaper option-
It all really depends on how much detail you need.
Just a thought.

If you want something to practice on rather than having to buy the whole lot up front on a DVD you can download individual maps from: Digital topographic maps download - mapstor.com

You'll have to drill down through the pages but there is a link to another site where you can do this.

Having said that I don't find the Russian maps as useful as the IGN ones - at least I can read the place names on the French ones :thumbup1::thumbup1:. If you want to get some idea of the level of info on the Russian maps try downloading one for an area you know - round your house for example. Don't expect Google Earth !!

Both the Russian and IGN maps are edge calibrated so you can import them into something like Ozi Explorer and get a moving "you are here" pointer. For a general overview I've tended to use the 1:1M tourist type maps that you can buy for about £10 in Stanfords.

Thankyou both!

Printing out from T4Africa is a cool idea. Printing would be the same cost whether its a bland contoured Russian map or a more simple line drawing with roads only. I could even laminate it all!! Big ££!

Having been brought up with UK OS maps I like the idea of all the info all the time, and will one day own all of them on paper! :)

So I like the contours on the Russian maps which would cost around $72.50 for all of Africa from

Russian Maps 1:500.000 Set - www.madmappers.com - Making African GIS accessible to all

but for just having an interest in whats around, and going to those places that the map highlights, a blank background that T4Africa provides might frustrate me but is probably enough.

Won't know till I get there perhaps!?
