Nokia 6210
I'm due an upgrade on my mobile/cell phone and thought it would make sense to get one with gps on it, can anybody recommend anything other than the above ?

I've got a Nokia N73 which I've been using for GPS for nearly a year and a half now.

Plus points
  • Fairly robust for a phone
  • Fairly good battery life (if Bluetooth if off)
  • The Symbian operating system can run TomTom Navigator and the Western Europe maps will fit on a 1GB Mini-SD card. Appears to have exactly the same features as the TomTom One XL.
  • Loud enough on max volume but you can use the head set supplied with the phone for spoken directions. Note that TomTom have omitted headphone sockets on cheaper units to encourage to to buy the expensive Rider.
  • Fast charging time
  • The 2mp camera is pretty good for a phone
The minus points
  • Battery life poor when Bluetooth is on
  • No built-in GPS (I use separate Bluetooth GPS receiver)
  • Symbian software can be a little slow compared other phones
  • Software update from Nokia website killed it (still under contract so going back to o2 for repair)
  • A car charger can only prolong battery life, not charge it from flat.
  • Small screen
Overall, 8/10 and I'll probably replace it with another Nokia, but with built-in GPS.

While on the subject of battery life and mains power on the road, fit a cigar lighter-style socket and buy one of these...

Craig, thanks for the link bud, like it, I have an N73 at the moment and that is what i'm looking to upgrade. I want the built in gps as you say so keep um coming

The lack of GPS is the killer for the N73. It's a proper PITA trying to keep both the phone and the separate receiver charged.

A mate has a Nokia N95 which has an excellent GPS receiver. Quite easily finds an accurate GPS signal indoors and away from windows. Only downside appears to be that it has no SD card slot for extra memory so you need to connect to a PC to transfer large amounts of data quickly.

I'll probably go for the N96 but I want to see what I'm getting for the money and how much of the features are extra, i.e voice directions appear to be a paid option on the N96 and it seems only the 6210 has the built-in compass if that's important to you.

There's also the 6110 which looks a little more robust than the N96 but has a small screen. You pay your money..., etc

Either way, I'll still be running TomTom Navigator on it in addition to the Nokia Maps software.
