Newbie going to morocco - Maps/GPS?
 

Hi there everyone, a friend of mine and i are planning on heading off to Morocco in about two weeks time (why haven't you got this sorted yet i hear you ask...).
We've got the car pretty much ready now but we're just trying to work on navigation now. We've got the Michelin 742 and the Reise Morocco map but were wondering if these are enough for navigating with or if there are other more detailed maps available anywhere?
I've also been looking into using a GPS system but am not sure if it would be worth it for a trip like this and what maps which are available are the best etc/
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

It kind of depends, IMO.
I have been playing around with GPS for a while and my current feelings about it are "it is something of a distraction - a useful distraction at times, such as when running about in an unfamiliar city, but a distraction overall".
With two, or more, of you in a 4 wheeler it need not be such a distraction - more a plaything perhaps - but on two wheels, that it is how I see things right now.

So, that doesn't answer your question, but, hey, you can read into the forum for Maroc Morocco - The HUBB to get more ideas + this forum about navigation in all of it's aspects :thumbup1:

Basically, it rather depends on what you want to do there and where you are going and how you intend to use the highways/pistes - lots of variables in other words.

Have you got Chris Scott's book "Morocco Overland"?

I find my Garmin software and GPS invaluable and would be not be without it in Morocco and Spain.

You can get free electronic maps for use with Garmin GPS.

The Michelin map is fine on roads out of town. I don't think its a lack of detail, its a lack of roads ;) It is a bit fragile so take care of it, not easy to replace while there perhaps if it gets eaten by the wind/coffee/goat.

GPS is handy in towns if you just want to get where you're going with minimum hassle.

I'm generally a big fan of using a GPS, but I found it to be useless in Morocco; I made the mistake of buying the Garmin map of Morocco and it was absolutely worthless. Haven't seen the OSM maps of Morocco, so don't know about those.

Generally I found paper maps to be sufficient, there generally aren't that many roads and signage is OK. GPS would mainly be useful for getting out of town in the morning, etc.

A very good summary of what's needed!

You only need 3 things:

GPS Vector Map Morocco for your pc and unit

CS's book

A paper map

(And the ability to to use/read the above:smartass:)

I use Olaf and OSm maps for Morocco, generally Olaf is better for the pistes but those that do appear in OSM can be more accurate.

OSM's advantage is the ability to do turn by turn routing so better for towns

I also took a selection of paper maps but barely used any due to the inaccuracies/phantom roads etc
