Maps (Which?) GPS (Worth it?) - Africa

Hello people, I'm finding this website the most useful source ever, so here's another question for you! A trip from London to Cape town. Is it worth buying GPS or can I get away with just maps? If so, which are the maps you would recommend for the trip? Thanks again for your help.

If you decide on a GPS, do the research before buying, the costs & capabilities differ immensely.

Hi Edorr,

I guess its all in what you intend to do! Some years ago nobody had a GPS! Now with the extra technology you have more options, go a bit further away from the beaten track. However, maps an a compas should always be packed and know how to use it. A GPS without a paper map is also of limited use. What I use is a Garmin Etrex Vista with Oziexplorer and the Russian staff maps on a laptop. I use the GPS only for track logging and eventual back tracking if I get lost and in combination with the PC with Oziexplorer I can also plan routes ahead for the next day so to say, which should prevent me from getting lost! So is it necessary... no if you stay on the main tracks. yes if you want to take some more obscure tracks. At least that is m.h.o.

Cheers,

Noel
