Plan to ride to magadan in 2012. Where's the best place to get maps for russia?

Ive tried stampford maps in london and the detail was a little lacking!

How much detail are you looking for? Unless you intend to do some real trail-blazing, in many of these areas there is essentially only one road in the direction you're going, so there's not much point in having detailed maps. Russian road atlases will be readily available once you're in Russia, various scales are typically available. If possible, you'd probably find it helpful to learn the Cyrillic alphabet before setting out, its not that hard.

In addition, Walter Colebatch has uploaded an extensive set of waypoints for Siberia and the Far East, including the road to Magadan, which is stickied in the Northern Asia subforum.

Certainly the best road atlas I have found, covering almost all of Russia, is in the link below.

It only excludes far, remote areas of north east Russia, from a line north of Mirny, Yakutsk, Khandigar and Susuman although those are included.
The scale varies 1:800,000 1:1,500,000 and 1:3,000,000 depending on density of region. It shows built up areas, towns, villages, roads, tracks, railways, and rivers (but not the depth!). Some topographical detail such as marshlands, forest, etc.
It also includes detailed street plans of 9 major European Russia cities plus 4 more in adjoining countries, and 1:200,000 maps of Moscow Region Distance charts (Km) and a full index of place names.
All names are in Cyrillic but each page has a ‘thumbnail index’ map showing town names in Roman/English alphabet. Useful practice learning to recognize and read the Cyrillic alphabet!

336 pages, slightly larger than A4. Includes a ‘free’ magnifier. Current edition is No.6. 2010-2011.

I am visiting UK in 3 weeks time and will happily bring copies if anyone PMs me with their name address and a promise to send me the cost plus UK postage (about £10 - £12) when received. I will include b/w photocopy of a poorer map of the north east road above he cut-off line, if requested

The sample pages in the links do not show the real quality of the print and relate to much older editions!

To clarify, £10-12 is estimated total of the cost of both the atlas and postage from/to UK.
I am happy to mail elsewhere from UK or locally en-route as I cross northern Europe (LT, LV, PL, D, NL, B, F.

TP, see if you can find these ... I have both but prefer this one to the one you linked to. Take a look and see what you think.

Cheers for the adice! I am a little more relieved that it doesn't seem to be that hard to get info!

I don't plan to be to off the beaten track. My bikes a 650gs so not exsactly a hardcore off road bike!

Especially on the main Trans-Siberian road, there is not that much to worry about, there only one road and no shortage of fuel, food, lodging. I have not been up to the Yakutsk/Magadan area yet, but there you need to pay more attention to where'll you'll find the basics. I think, however, that Colebatch's waypoints and the info in his ride reports on ADVRider should provide about all the info you need (along with a basic roadmap).

Received nothing so far, but with the weather, the Chrimbo rush and the postal service being as "efficient" as it is, it may take a while. Will let you know as soon as it appears. (This assumes you've had time to send it).

T.Rex got his as I mailed it to him in Germany last friday as I was driving across Germany between my homes.

The others for UK folks are now safely here with me in London.
I will be mailing them out in the next day or two - as soon as I have dealt with the 4 months mail piled up behind the front door!

Your Atlases were mailed yesterday morning, Saturday 18th.

There is one left if anyone wants (final cost was GBP10 including P&P), otherwise I can get more and bring to UK at beginning of March.

The one Colebatch prefers (which I believe I got for him!) was not available in 3 map/book shops in Moscow. From memory it only shows roads and did not have much, if any, topographical information other than rivers and rail.

If its still available I'd like to buy your last copy of the atlas. I plan to spend 3 months next year going from Vladivostok to Europe and at the moment don't have any decent maps. I can send you a British address (my father) to keep the posting for you simple and I'll get him to forward it onto me here in Australia (he's bound to be sending other stuff post christmas).

Let me know how to get the money to you and I'll send it right away.
