Im looking for some detailed maps of south and central american countries along of the pan american highway. Enough detail for some off the beaten track detours aswell, can anyone suggest which make of map, where to look for them, or possibly to purchase some already used maps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am about to leave for South America. Well there are maps available for South America. This maps are Russion military maps (1:500`000) from 1945. Ok, they are not up to date, but time is running slowly in SAM, so they might be very helpful.
You can order them from Touratech (www.touratech.de)as CD-Rom and plot the pages you need. I also heard that one is able to get them already as paper version from other stores. You can use them with the GPS even if they are not always absolutely correct.

Burnout, thanks for your response, I just looked on their website and was unable to find cd-rom maps available in the uk. Trying other sources. Where are you planning to visit? and for how long?

For South America you can download free maps from www.patagonia4x4.com.ar
Very detailed maps. Look for the GPS tab.
