Magellan Meridian GPS

European / USA version???

Hello there all,

As some of you have noticed the good prices of Garmin units in USA, i kinda have set my mind on Magellan Meridian Color, any similar problems with base maps as with Garmin units?
Or some reason why Garmin would be better choice? regards, Sami

Sami, is this the new Magellan unit that uses a hard drive inside it? If so, you might want to hold off buying it for a while, because the durability of the hard drives in a motorcycle environment has not yet been proven.

I am just starting a long-term test of a Garmin 2620 (basically, a 2610 with an internal hard drive) this summer, to see how it holds up. I think the two products use similar hard drives. I doubt if I will have any substantial results until the fall.

The Meridian Color is a handheld unit with a reasonable reputation.

As with all mapping units, have a look at the quality of the maps available for the areas you will cover.
Much of the undeveloped world will only have basemap coverage with coastlines and main highways but the same applies for Garmin as well.
