Loading routes into Mapsource / Garmin 60CSx

I cannot manage to download the routes from the Chris Scott Morocco Overland book/site onto my GPS. I have entered all the coordinates into mapsource for route MS6, but it takes ages, and some of the waypoints dont give coordinates. When i go to the website and click the icon to download the route, it just comes up with a Notepad type document and i don't know where to copy this to on my harddrive

Any help please

Hi Steven,
If you want to load all of the waypoints for a route, then the only way is to enter them all manually into mapsource. For the points where Chris doesn't list co-ordinates, then they are not important - he just gives some information and the km point along the route.
It would take an extremely long time to do this for all the routes, i'm pretty sure Chris would say this is not necessary - although, i'm sure many people have done so.
The downloads he gives on his site are for the 'key' waypoints only - ie: if you have these loaded they are all you really need and will be enough to stop you going too far wrong.

Morocco Overland ~ Routes

When you click on an area (eg: Morocco East) you get a list of the 'key waypoint files (.gpx)
When you download them they appear (on my pc anyway) as an unrecognised file type.
All you need to do is double click the file and tell the pc you want to select the type of program from a list, then just select Mapsource from the list that appears and 'robert's your mothers brother!!'
It doesn't matter where on the hard drive the file is when you do this.

Hope this helps
Sam

Thanks Niva,

Yes, i've loaded Olaf's topo map onto my GPS.

I've actually found out since how to get Mr Scott's routes onto the GPS without doung all the waypoints manually. I opened the file icon on his website with left click, then FILE, SAVE AS, and saved it in MY GARMIN folder. This saves as in mapsource as a .gpx file and when opening mapsource consists of a series of waypoints rather than as a route. But a route can be created and the waypoints used, byy pressing Control R in mapsource window. This then saves as a .gbd file whatever that is...seems to work

Hi Steve,
Glad you've got it working. I'm no expert on the different gps file types, but as long as it does what it needs to then i guess it doesn't really matter!
The download files are just for the 'key points' so if you are following the route in the book, be aware it wont have every point, but will be enough i'm sure (i'll put that comment to the test in 2 weeks time!!)

Happy travels
Sam
