Converting calibrated TTQV maps

Hi,

I bought a CD with maps for this TTQV software. The maps themselves are images, somehow based on the PNG format. They are all named <mapname>_png.cal. But they are changed somehow because I cannot open them in photoshop which normally accepts the PNG format.

Is there any way to convert the files so I can open them in photoshop, add some information, names etc. and save them again?

Thanks!

The xxx_png.cal files are not images but calibration files used by TTQV. You cannot open them in photoshop, they contain only georeferential informations about the image. Search for the xxx.png file, that's what you're looking for.

OK aggreed.

But having looked at it a bit better, the problem remains: There are no XXX.png files only XXX.pny files. These are likely modified png files. Does anyone know how to convert them back to png?

Hi Redhouse. According to the TTQV forum these are encrypted files (generated by Daerr?) and only TTQV is able to read them. There still might be a hack around anywhere, but haven't seen one yet.

Found once a description how to export the files with TTQV but can't remeber where and what exactly it was about. Have you tried that already?

Cheers, Kudi

Hi Redhouse,

Not sure if I touch the right issue here but if you are refering to the Russian Staff maps on CD and how these can be used in other programs... either to read or to edit... I am using Oziexplorer and that program reads the Russian maps without any problem. I do not know if that is the same as reading "encripted file" but the maps themselves do not seem to be encrypted. Also Oziexplorer is a lot easier to use compared to TTQV.

Cheers,

Noel

Hi, I've just run into the same problem as the original poster. Apparently .PNY files are specific to QV Touratech and can't be opened in anything else.

Does anyone with a copy of QV know if .PNY's can be opened in QV and then exported in another format ?

(I have the maps, but not the software)

cheers

Why not just buy a working package?
Anyone that has tried to obtain digital maps of this area will know that there is not much about, why? Because; demand for the product is not there, no one would buy it, they would steal it by copying.
I've just bought;
Fugawi World Navigator
Fugawi North Africa 1:500,000
Darr Tunisia
and Darr Marocco
from these I've got a set of maps that work.
No problems, easy to use, scale in and out, mark waypoints, routes and tracks, etc.
Can't read the Russian but who needs to? you just select the area on a small scale map and click then the large scale is loaded. Problem is someone has to develop all of this - and someone has to pay.
Ever tried to photocopy Sahara Overland? No because it's not cost effective. Bet Chris never puts it out on disc though. If he did he'd make no more money and this site and all of the useful info would be gone.
I appologise in advance to all those that I've just offended.
Kevin (and I'm poor too)

Er, Kevin, this isn't Chris Scott's site. His are http://www.sahara-overland.com/ and http://www.adventure-motorcycling.com/ plus he sponsors and moderates the Sahara forum of the HUBB.

See http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/store/ and http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/johnson/ for whose site this is!

BUT I totally agree with you re copying books cds etc. Too many people want a free ride, but somebody has to pay to create the info or it wouldn't exist. We strongly believe in paying for and supporting the software we use, and encourage others to do so too. If you use it, you should expect to pay a reasonable fee for it, and be GLAD to do so - 'cause it means you'll see more and better in the future. Plus it's the right thing to do. Do you (not you Kevin!) know anyone who works for free? I don't.

By the same token, we greatly appreciate those who support the HUBB (Horizons Unlimited Bulletin Board) and the HU website with memberships and advertising. It's a huge amount of work (it's my full time + job) and expensive to run, and we like to think a few people get some valuable info out of it, as well as an opportunity to meet and travel with others of like mind. Without the HU site, it would be a lot harder to do all this travelling. I know, I did it in the 80's and 90's before the net - and Chris's books! So we appreciate your support! See http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/store/ for more.

thanks,

your hosts,

Grant and Susan Johnson

I did buy the maps - unfortunately they only work with QV, which only works on a Windows computer (I use a Mac & Mac navigation software). So to use my (otherwise expensive and useless) maps I'd need to fork out another grand or so.

Anyway, I'll repeat the question which I think was misread:

Does anyone who uses QV know whether it will export .PNY files in other formats ??

cheers!

Grant, Susan - your and the other moderators efforts are well appreciated. How would we manage without you?

A suggestion: why not auto-prompt for a voluntary paypal contribution on enrollment or after x amounts of log ins?
It's quite easy not to notice the donate button after a while.

Richard, thanks for the thought!

We will have something similar - and at least a GOLD star - on the HUBB soon. ALL NEW software in testing next week when I get home from Mexico and Canada, so give me a month and it will be up if it kills me. and it might...

Also the major redo of the site is well in progress, coming along, albeit with a few significant glitches, but we're getting there.

Thanks, Grant

Sorry - what more can I say, but it made the point and also gave you good reason to reply.
I'll try to get my facts right in the future, but I'm used to the English Land Rover forums where everything is a lot more basic, I sometimes forget that this site is frequented by all races and predominently tow wheelers not four. Anyway consider me 'put in my place' and I'll make every effort to get thing right in the future.
Just like to say this is an excellent site especially for people who want to travel, or indeed are travelling, rather than dreamers.

Oh, Richard, sorry mate not trying to point the finger - just an opinion.
No offence meant.

Back to the original question...

I've exported from TTQV to a bitmap before. I've used this to draw a picture of our route and then present it at a slideshow. When it is converted to a bitmap you lose all the calibration information though. I suppose you could mark locations on the map, along with their corresponding lat/longs and then recalibrate in whatever you're going to use on the Mac. Good luck!
