IMG files, Mapsource and nRoute

Hope some of you experts out there can help me when Garmin can't. I've installed Mapsource (several versions) and nRoute, which according to everyone should read the mapping .img files which are available on many websites. However, they're not recognised by the Garmin software, not even the ones supplied by Garmin and which are on my Garmin GPS. Any ideas what might be going wrong? BTW, my updated Garmin maps won't unlock either, if that's a clue to what's going wrong.

I know there is plenty of other (better ?) software out there and I've got it, but this Garmin problem is really bugging me!!

MapSource can't "read" map files, they have to be installed. I know nothing about nRoute.

To get .img files into your GPS you can use sendmap20, which you can get from cgpsmapper.com. If you want to load MapSource installed maps and others at the same time, make sure you load the maps with MS first, then sync and load the others. Sendmap will let you *add* maps to those already loaded.

You can load through IMG2GPS as well, does the same thing, remember that existing maps you may have loaded will be erased.

The procedure after downloading IMG2GPS is to open the application, click on the load folder button, at which point a dialog box will ask you to select the maps (from whatever folder you have stored the maps).

In the next screen you check whatever you want to load (there is a list which will open up).

Click upload to GPS and you should see a small window open up telling you the progress of the upload. When it's done, the maps will be on the GPS

In case nothing loads, check to see if you have duplication within mapsets etc, should usually not get this problem.

About the Garmin maps, pester their tech help, which, BTW is not the greatest.

Mapsource requires 'preview' files as well as the .imj files you can get from various web sites ....

1) select the .imj files you want to have together as a 'map set' - check they have the same zoom levels (and range at that zoom) [gpsMapEditor]

2) use cgpsmapper to generate the preview files .. more info on the cgpsmapper web site.

3) use the regedit file generated along with the preview files by cgpsmaper to update the registary .. so mapsource can find the files - caution you MUST edit the file to reflect where you have put all these files ...!!! If you don't have the correct location mapsource will no longer function... Use 'system restore' to be safe!

-------------------------------
The Garmin Maps should be sorted out with their teck help - you paid for it - use it. Oh I found caps lock works well on the security code entry!

Thanks for the feedback. I must have misunderstood advice on other websites. It's obviously easier to use software other than Mapsource.

Maybe not: if a map can be loaded into Mapsource then that is by far the easiest way to use them. If there is no mapsource installer with a map then other methods may be easier.
