How to upload a map into garmin Nuvi 13xx ?

Ok I must be an idiot but I cannot find anywhere in any of the garmin's docs how to load a map into our new Garmin Nuvi 1340.

We have the Brazil map that my husband sourced from somewhere (?:confused1 but I am completely clueless as to how on earth I load that from my PC into the Garmin?

Or can we upload maps into the machine only by buying them from Garmin website ?
Help anyone???

Thanks,

Maria

gps

you must have a usb cord going from your pc to your gps unit then open your map source select send to gps unit and that is it , make sure the gps is on while transfer and let it load the map and then shut down , you may look at youtube and they have video of everything so...

Hendikaf thanks.

This is what I've done so far.

Select to see hidden folders. Then I copied the Brazil files into the Garmin hidden folder \.System.

There I have the Europe folder (called GMAPPROM.IMG) and now the new Brazil Map called GMAPSUPP.IMg.

With Basecamp I can see both maps in the Nuvi, so nothing wrong with the Brazil Map.

However when I try to see Brazil in the Nuvi, I can only see the Europe Map (in the Tools section where i should be able to see all my maps) .

This is really strange because it is there!

What I am trying to do now is:

1- copy the Europe Map into my PC (just in case!) ;
2 - rename the europe Map in the Nuvi;
3 - rename the Brazil Map as "GMAPPROM.IMG".

Reboot the Nuvi and see if this time I can see the bl**dy Brazil map! If this does not work I have no idea what to do next! :confused1:

Maybe remove the Europe Map from the NUVI and hope the Brazil will pop out?????

Cheers,

gps

ok maybe you could try to go on your gps and see if you can select option to choose which map you are using , you may have the map but you still need to select it on your gps if you delete the first one it may do it automaticaly but its not needed . if you have multi map you have to choose which one you want , some gps do it automaticaly but I do not know about yours. on few of my gps you have to go to setting map or option menu. try youtube if needed , there are plenty of video on gps . or go to garmin and download the manual.

Hi Hendikaf,
I really appreciate your help on this!

So far this is what I've done:

This issue has been raised many times and lots of solutions have been suggested in many forums ... I tried all that was suggested in all forums related to this issue, but this is not working.

Here is the problem, I moved from Europe to Brazil so I got the Brazil map.

What I've done so far:

1 - show hidden files in my PC in order to see the \.system file in my Nuvi (when plugged to my PC!)
2 - Moved the Brazil map (which is unlocked!) from my PC to the \.system drive
Result : can't see the Brazil map in the Tool etc... screen.

3 - I uploaded the Basecamp software from Garmin as suggested somewhere. There I can see both maps.
4 - I downloaded the Brazil map again from internet using Basecamp, which I assume put it again in the Nuvi device. I can confirm I have the latest Brazil map apparently!
Result: still not showing in the device, only in the Basecamp software!

5 - renamed the europe map GMAPPROM.IMg with dummy name (as it was suggested that NUVI is sensitive to name files!) and renamed the Brazil file from GMAPSUPP.IMG to GMAPPROM.IMG in the \.system file.
Result: still not showing Brazil, only Europe ticked in the Tool etc Menu of the device.

6 - Someone suggested that the device has limited memory so I removed europe map
Result: no map at all showing

7 - I restored the Europe map (renamed Europe.IMG which the device does not seem to care)

8 - still no map showing at all

9 - went into Basecamp and uploaded both maps
Results: europe map is showing again in the tool etc box of the garmin (and is ticked on) but nothing else!

Short of burning my device what else can I do????? I just don't understand what is going on!

Thanks in advance for any help / advice / idea on that! This is driving me crazy I've probably spent over 10 hours btw today and yesterday trying to sort this out! Gahaa!

Cheers

Hi Maria
Perhaps you don't have "Brasil"in Mapsource version? Can you see "Brasil ...."map between other maps in MS?If this is not the case you can't send the map from PC to GPS in "ordinary"way.
I assume you have the map only as "img" file .Create new folder on your PC and name it "garmin".Copy img file of Brasil map in this folder ,must be as "gmapsupp"or rename it so and then copy the folder on SD card.IF map is unlocked you should see it
Cheers

Hi Endurofly!
I don't use Mapsource, I use BaseCamp which I downloaded from the Garmin site, so I presume it is pretty much the same.
when I open Basecamp I see no map IF the garmin is not plugged to the Pc.
When I plug the Nuvi to the PC, Basecamp shows from the the NUVI drive that there are 2 files identified as:

City Navigator Europe NT 2011.1
and
City Navigator Brazil NT v.4

When I double click on the name files it tells me that it is located in the G drive (the Nuvi drive) in folder \.system\

However I have noticed something!
maybe a breakthrough here!
In basecamp, when I right click on the Europe Map i have a menu appearing and 2 lines are clickable (the rest being in light grey so I cannot select!):

- Check for device software update
- Navigate Map

For Brazil the option "Navigate Map" is in light grey and I cannot click on it.
Would that mean it is locked??

Thanks for the help!

Hi again
Sorry I'm not familiar with BC.To make the long story short, lets skip BC and MS: create folder "garmin" with Brasil..map (gmapsupp.img)and send it to SD card.It should work unless the map is locked (GPS should teel you).

Tutorial

Hi I found this thread via a google search and have some information that might be of use. I realise that this thread is rather old but maybe someone else will find it in the future.

This web site gives detailed instructions on how to go about updating the maps in your Garmin device.

Tutorial: Transfering Map Files to Garmin GPS

I have just used it.

Cheers G.
