GPS Map of Ecuador and Colombia
 

I hope someone can please help me as I am heading back to South America next Tuesday. I am having trouble finding a good map of Ecuador and Colombia. I have the Smellybiker stuff but am a little disapointed in it. I have a good one of Peru and have been searching some but am running out of time. Please help if you know of a good place to download it. I have a Garmin Zumo 550 and I am still learning on it as well. So many projects and so little time. Thanks Larry

Wow I was really hoping that someone would have responded to this by now. I have looked some more today but really do not see what I need in downloadable maps.

Reason why no one has responded is probably that there are no good Garmin maps available for these countries. Good maps are available only for small amount of countries, for other there is "Garmin Worldmap" product that has very generic and inaccurate basemap.

Thanks for the reponse. I was beginging to think no one was alive out there. I have the smellybiker maps and I think those are better than the World Map but I am not sure on that. A friend of mine is going to bring me his world map one so I can at least look at on my computer to see if it is any better. I know the data is out there somewhere and in some kind of format but just not sure how to get it into something I can download and use. I did manage to find some paper maps that I can use. I think that with the smellybiker stuff will do but you sure get spoiled. How did Lewis and Clarke do it. I would hate to have to bring a sextant and take a reading every day at noon.

Then there are people working without maps of any kind - the earliest explorers!

You used to be able to go to Garmins web site and look at the maps .. that way you could check the detail.

You can go to smellybikers web site and check the next version (version 2) .. but you'll need a (free) program to see the data... you are limited to teh amount of data you can download for your sample.

Well I loaded World Map from Garmin and it is better than Smelly biker for the part of South America that I am looking at. The map that I have for Peru that i downloaded off the net is about 6 times better than either of these that I have to buy. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The map of Peru covers what .. 1/50th (or less) of the world ... just saying that the world maps have a lot more area to cover.

The maps will improve over time ... if people contribute their tracks to the map authors ... excet for Garmin ... who probably won't take your tracks ... well not for world map anyway.

I run both the world map an smellybikers on my HCX Vista. Works perfectly, they contribute nicely to each other, But a gps is only a help, you should always bring real maps as well.

I will drink to that any day. It is also pretty hard to buy good maps down there but I have one for each country that I am bringing with me. What bugs me is I know what I am looking for it out there I just can not find it.

Rebaseonu of the post above sends you to some site that points to www.colrut.com. Just go there directly and you'll find two ways to get the maps. With and without having Mapsource installed on you computer. Mine is uploading right now and so tomorrow I should be able to tell how good they are... fingers crossed.

Just wanted to share my experience. I just used colrut in october. If you stick to the main roads - It will lead you turn by turn. Also Bogota works quite fine, although it will not be what you expect probably. However, sometimes it has just draft of the routes - for 2nd rate roads, but sometimes for the 1st as well. There were some roads, e.g. from Medellin to Bucaramanga (the nicer and the less used one) that were not even on the map. In most of the cities it is worth nothing.

But still I think it was good to have it, for sure.

Now I am in Ecuador and the map is crap. Even Panamericana not covered.
