GPS for Central/South America

Hi

Doing a Toronto - Buenos Aires ride starting in October, still deciding on a GPS unit. Most seem to only have N. American maps, does anyone know a unit that has maps for Central/South America? is this something you can upload? Any feedback on units used for C./S. America would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Brian

We are using a garmin Montana in s. America with maps from smellybiker that we loaded ourselves and are very pleased with them. The gps will take many different maps and is pretty tough and easy to read.

Gamin 60scx using Opensource maps

We're using a Garmin 60scx, upgrade is now the 62. Also, in a car, not on bike and use it a lot of hiking & trekking. The Montana is more user friendly (Bigger viewing area and has touch screen).

Use opensource maps. Install Mapsource (PC) or BaseCamp (Mac) on your computer and then download and install the maps. OSM is best in most of Colombia, Ecuador and Boliva.

Perut (perut.org) best for peru.
Mapear (Proyecto Mapear - Acceso Denegado) best for Arg and Chile.
Tracksource (Tracksource - Mapas Gratuitos para GPS) for Brazil.

There is a dedicated thread for installing OSM maps if you have troubles. Cheers!
