GPS - best of both worlds?
Hi,

I'm going on a trip from Denmark to Morocco in a Land Rover. I'm looking for a GPS that gives me all the convenience features like POI and "3D" maps (for everyday use), but It should also have the possibility of following waypoints on offroad pistes (like for example the GPSmap 60csx). Can anyone recommend a GPS unit that offers both?

A Garmin Zumo, which is a motorcycle-specific GPS.

An excellent option is the Garmin 2610 which worked well for me on and off road in Morocco. They've been discontinued now, but are pretty easy to find on ebay. The replacement 2720 shares the same features, but with the more upto date display and better poi options. A nice unit, but you'll pay around double the price. The only thing these units lack is the ability to store multiple tracklogs, which shouldn't be an issue if you're carrying a laptop and can download your track at the end of each day.
If money's no option then take a look at the Garmin 276c and the newer 278c. They're fantastic units with every feature you could need in a very tough case.

Garmin ZUMO 550
Could anyone give solid info on this device..... i.e a user? My new bike is on order and wife is going over to UK in August... and a chance for a choice of a new gps is in the offing. Apart from all the normal review and PR stuff, I'd like some honest opinions before I buy - otherwise I will just purchase a GPSmap 296 and use that if the Zumo is more a gimmick than functional.
Would appreciate advice....?

I don't have any personal experience of the Zumo and haven't found anyone who's written a comprehensive review about their move from a 2610 to the Zumo, however...

- the Zumo's battery power is useful
- I imagine the track log memory is larger than the 2000 points on the 2610.

Regarding the Maroc Topo (GPS Vector maps), when you come to download them to your unit, DESELECT THE TOPO OVERLAPS so you only get the street maps. The topo overlays and ground coverage shadings are so comprehensive you can't 'see the wood for the trees'.

Thanks for the input guys... will keep looking around. Maybe I just buy something worthwhile that I can use in the A/C cockpit as well.... between flying & biking I may well find a good dual-purpose unit.

If you come across a cheap TomTom Rider, make sure to check here before you commit to it.. I'm just about to start the process of trying to get my money back on one..

Garmin 60csx
Hi

I used to use a 2610 but have recently brought a 60CSX - so far have been very impressed with it. Apart from having a smaller screen than the 2610, its much better overall especially with track/waypoint routing.

I looked into a 276c but was advised against it firstly due to cost, secondly its getting old now and thirdly the 60csx was better.

The 2610 was a good unit though
