Garmin "Route calculation error"
Hi All,

I've searched the forum & couldn't find this anywhere so here goes... When I try and get a long-ish route (ie from the UK to mid-France) on my Garmin 60CSx I get this error message "Route calcution error: not enough memory available" and I've got a 2Gb SD card in it!!! Am I doing something stupid?

No, it's normal. The 2Gb card is storing the map files not processing the data. The processing memory is inbuilt and much less. (Not specified on the Garmin web site as far as I can see - does anyone know?)

I experience exactly the same messages on the same unit. It depends on how far away you are from the destination and the detail in the maps you have uploaded.

Yip Stephans got it in one.

I had the same issue. It just cant handle the number of waypoints it needs to make the route.

Garmin Error
The above error message may not only be due to insufficient memory. It can be triggered in other circumstances. I have a garmin KNA-G520 and it calculates routes from say calais, france to prato, italy no problem. You need to be very sure about the navigation preference options that you set. For instance I found that if you have a preference "= avoid minor roads" and your destination is located on a minor road then the software will tie itself in a knot and run out of memory. Of course I could update the software to a later version to see if this cured it. In my case reviewing and altering my navigation preferences solved my problems.

It's the number of decisions it has to make. London to say Edinburgh on the A-1 is easy as you only have half a dozen points, but tell it to check every unclassified road and there are too many possibilities for it to remember the results of them all and pick the shortest or quickest. Remember it's a machine and can't discount even a crazy route via Cardiff until it's started checking the numbers.

You'll find city centre to city centre is worst as it might have enough memory to get from central London to the edge of Edinburgh by every possible initial route, but will run out when it combines every possible way into the second city.

Set the unit for quickest route.
Tell it to avoid minor roads.
If you like the minor roads add manual waypoints and split the route into a larger number or shorter ones.

I use 1 route for each day. That has less waypoints to work through for each route.
I have used that for a 30 day trip accross the USA and back without any problems.
Each route has the start, end and the waypionts I want to keep me on track plus gas stations, sights.
At the start of each day I start a new route and delete the starting point because if I did not stop at the end point the day before it will try to route me back to the starting piont.
It is much easer to make adjustments like changing waypionts on a smaller route.
To change a route I cope the route I am on then delete and and add waypoints until I get what I want. I found it easier that creating a new route.

i have no problems doing long trips on my quest, and thats only got 256Mb of memory and no expansion! it got me from le havre to faro in southern portugal ok, thats 1200miles.

if it struggles doing it all in one hit, break the trip up into smaller sections and store the routes.
