Garmin Nuvi 205 + T4A Maps - Advice?

Hi,

Long time reader, first time poster (haha).

We're going London to Cape Town from March and I was looking at GPS. I know that T4A and Garmaps can compliment each other nicely, but I think we'll be fine at the street view, we'd just like to have a nice rough overland route. Plus T4A is cheaper, which helps.

The decision for the Nuvi 205 was simply because it was the cheapest. We don't want anything fancy, just something that shows the maps from the SD card and shows our co-ordinates.

This is inside a 4x4, so not worried about elements.

As I've never even bothered using a GPS unit before, I was wondering if this system would be fine for the trip. Just the Nuvi 205 and an SD card with the T4A Africa maps on it. For under $250, I think it's a bargain, hence my questioning of the system.

Thanks for the help.

The T4A website is very helpful with questions like that and you can even email them with specific questions. There can be compatibility issues with having Garmap and T4A on the same sd card if your T4A is an older version.

Which way are going and how long are you traveling for? We're starting in the south in April, going up the eastern side.

Thanks for the reply. I've been through their site, I know this unit does work with their maps. I wasn't looking at the Garmaps really, I was saying how I wasn't going to use them... unless people REALLY recommended that I use them in tandem. I was more just seeing if that system and setup had any known issues. I think the price of $250 for everything through me off.

We'll be going south, London to Cape, starting March and going for 4 months. I dare say we'd cross paths around Malawi in May.

OK Understand... Yes, T4A is the way to go and no, you don't need other maps. They usually update in Feb, so perhaps wait a month before buying the maps.

May I think we'll still be in Zimbabwe, but when I see a cruiser, the same model and color as ours, I'll wave and shout obscenities about bad rugby and cricket!

Sounds like a plan. Yours is 2 years younger than ours though, maybe we'll pilfer you for parts :p

And thanks for the heads up on the Feb update. I had read that, but completely forgot about it.
