Garmin + mac
 

Hey y'all,

Still a lot off learning to do.

I'm planning a trip trough Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India.
I have a garmin gps 60csx with the garmin worldmap
(Int. Marine point basemap 2001) installed.
I don't think this worldmap from garmin will cut it !!!
I did put the tracklog from Beddhist (smellybiker -> forum -> asia -> india - north) on my gps60 and this works.
The only disadvantage with the garmin worldmap is that there are no roads visible on my gps underneath the tracklog from Beddhist.
As a matter of fact there are no roads in the whole of india according to the garmin worldmap. (also no roads in Iran, Pakistan)
I'm starting to learn that i can see roads on my computer (mac) if I open Garmin roadtrip (ex bobcat)

Q #01 : If I buy the Wanderlust Worldmap (smellybiker) will i see more roads on my gps screen ???

I downloaded the Worldmap Sample from this site.
I work with a macintosh and the WM sample is a windows file.
According to the garmin website you can convert windows files to macintosh files : (Garmin: MapConverter for Windows Updates & Downloads)

Q #02 : Anybody tried this ?
Q #03 : Maybe it is better to install new maps with a friends pc (windows) ?

I don't have any experience with the smelly stuff. But I am using Mac and Roadtrip.

the best thing would be [if you have an intel mac] to install windows and mapsource, you could convert the maps yourself or use mapsource. I don't use it that way, but you could.

Otherwise, as long as you find somebody to convert the maps for you with the windows converter, you could manage to do it all Mac. But keep the files backuped somewhere. You never know what happens in the future, and you don't want to be stuck somewhere without maps.... BTW never trust the gps only, bring paper maps..

I imagine the answer would be absolutely Yes:
You open the world map on a Windows PC, convert it to the Mac format and then it will open in Roadtrip.

I can confirm that I have done this successfully with the Tracks4Africa maps, and also a Morocco map I got from somewhere, dunno about smelly bikers maps though.

As to the idea of using Windows on the intel Macs as the primary source of Mapping software... its totally doable, and kind of cool to flick between mac and windows screens using Parallels, however finding somewhere to store these converted files is annoying easiest done with an external flash drive.
With boot camp the whole process is more frustrating.

Thanx for the reply. I'll definitely look into the ' Parallels ' solution.
I'm on an old mac (powerbook g4-1,67)
Rather spend my money on travel instead off the new intellmacs.

Recently I tried to make a route to a camping-place in roadmap and look what came up (red flag = coordinates) (see attachment):


Now look at the location of the camping on the googlemap at the bottom of their page.

The coordinates from the camping-site seem to be correct. They are confirmed by somebody on the Hubb !!!

Could somebody with a pc (microsoft) try to enter the coordinates and tell me if they have the same (false) location ?

Depending on which notation you use, you should convert those numbers. I don't know why there is no standard in this, and even if the standard is not there, why you cant put in any numbers and have the software automatically convert it to the notation you are using.

I am using HDDD.MM.MMM'

so the first numbers the degrees and minutes stay always the same I guess.
But the last batch you must convert. In this case divide the 39.41 by 60 and multiply by 1000. The same for the 55.41. And you will get the following numbers:

41' 14''39'.41
29'01''55'.41

=

N41 14.656
E29 01.923

and put that in your RoadTrip, and it looks good!

Toffe site, ga hem nog eens uitgebreid bestuderen...

Remember to use WGs84, or something like that. its about closest to the general industry standard.

Judging from some of your above questions I would like suggest that you play around a bit with paper based maps and get a feel for navigating using longitude and latitude, may sound old fashioned, but I suspect that it will pay off.

P.S.

Parallels will not run on a powerPC Apple. You will need an Intel based mac.

I am gonne try to transcode the smellybike maps on a friends pc.
And put the new maps on my gps60. + a backup on a portable disk.

I am going to use aldfasionned paper maps and ask the locals ALSO.
