Garmin Dakota 20

I'm a complete novice (read clueless) when it comes to GPS that isn't either a TomTom or built into a car.

I'm planning a trip to Morroco in a few months. I want to use Olafs maps and understandthey work best with Garmin units.

Will they work fine with the Dakota 20 unit, he mentions they work with the eTrex series so one would assume that any Garmin will be fine but just wanted to check.

I especially liked the Dakota20 because it has the 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter.

Does anyone manufacture an in car cradle for it, or will I have to find something else like an adjustable generic holder to fit?

Thank you!

While I can't give you a guarantee I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work with any Garmin compatible map.

I believe Garmin make a car bracket themselves. Touratech probably make a lockable version, but it's probably overkill for a car.

There is a wiki site for this model, including some comparative reviews.

My 60CSx also has compass and altimeter. I've never had any use for them on the road. The GPS altitude turned out to be more accurate than the barometer, so I turned it off.

It should work fine, as beddhist mentions.

Garmin makes a cart/marine mount for the Dakota which might work for you. Or, you can get cradles & mounts for the Dakota from RAM. The RAM part number for just the cradle itself is RAM-HOL-GA36, and you can buy various mounts to attach the cradle to whatever you want (e.g., suction cup mount, etc.)

You'll probably also want an in-car charger for it.

If you like the Dakota 20 you may want to look at the Oregon 450. It's a step up from the Dakota (much better screen, etc.) yet only about $20 more (street price, about $50 more MSRP).

Thanks for the replies!

Since I am driving and my passenger is navigating having a screen large enough to see whilst driving is not an issue, is the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx any good? It looks excellent value at £120.

Would that that Garmin with Olafs maps and a tomtom with the teleatlas morrocon maps be okay to navigate with? I think we'll be fine but wanted to make sure. Some people say it's best to get one of Garmins satnavs designed purely for car use like the 1490 but there must be a reason why some many people use the smaller outdoor garmins?

My fried living with us here happens to have one of these. The processor seems to slow to keep up with modern auto-routing maps and the search function isn't too hot, either. If you are in a car I suggest you get a Nuvi.

Hi!

I used Olafs map with Garmin Dakota 20, no problems.
