garmin 60 and 76

Some questions on the new garmin gear for you experts out there.

1 Are they available in the UK or Europe yet?
2 Are decent mounts available for them yet?
3 Are they, or could they be made as rugged as the V?

Thanks

J

OK, after some research
1 Not completely sure if anyone has them in stock, but people clain to.

2 Seem quite rugged, but hard to tell
3 Touratech have a fairly fragile looking mount

I'd appreciate any hard facts or actual experience of either of these. Oh and a price would be nice ( sterling or euro )

Thanks
J

Well, I know someone who's trying to get one in the UK with no success. Seems it will hit the streets soon though...

Thanks guys. AB we should finally get together some time.
Seems like the 60 is still quite hard to get hold off.
Has anyone had any success, anywhere in Europe?
J

I managed to get a 60c a couple of months ago via a friend in Dubai and DHL’ed it over here. Given the difference in price and the exchange rate you could probably get a cheap holiday on the beach for a few days if you flew over to get it... apparently the “GPS souk” is awash with the things

Anyway – my opinion after using it Morocco on the last trip.
It acquires amazingly quickly compared to some the other Garmin’s I have used. For the most part I would say the spec’s are relatively accurate and it does what it says on the tin. I mounted it on the dash of a defender with a Garmin mount bought in the UK and had no need of an external aerial (a first for me!) Using it is fairly idiot proof which for me is a good thing.

Slight niggles, I found the back light very dim and the screen difficult to read whist driving in bright light and your wearing sunglasses. The power lead also gets in the way when using the dash board mount which is a pain when you stop and want to put it away.

Its very rugged, survived being dropped numerous times, server vibration from corrugated roads and constant attention from a three year old. I would doubt however that its fully water proof despite what Garmin say but it did survive a few dousings in cola and fruit juice!

One thing that has to be mentioned though is the accuracy of the supplied base maps international boarders. According to these I spent nearly a week 20 k in side Algeria...

Personally I really liked it and would recommend it whole heartedly – its compact, easy to use, survives rough treatment.
