E-Trex?
 

hallo!
Im preparing for the trip to west africa, and considering which GPS to buy.
So I got a few questions about that.
first of all, do I really need gps with maping data? If so, which is the best value to price unit?
What other things are important when looking for such a gps unit?
I was looking at some products and two of them interested me mostly. these are: Garmin e-trex (yellow) and e-trex legend. What do you think about that units? are they good choice for such a trip?

I have an e-trex vista and am very happy. The e-trex series are good compact and lightweight. A good choice. As for mapping I am not sure there are maps available for that area, or if there are how accurate they are. Also by using the track log and way points along your route, you can keep an accurate record of where you have been in case you get lost.

I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on mapping; however it would be hard to buy a GPS without this feature nowadays. So focus on how the unit feels in your hand or on your bike, the clarity of the screen, a weatherproof unit is a good idea but not a must, battery life and so on. If you’re going to do a lot of off-road riding, I would get 2 cheap, but still good, units rather than an expensive one. Yes I said 2 units. GPS do fail. I learned that the hard way, luckily not too far from civilization in familiar territory http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif.
