Does anyone know any Windows Mobile based GPS?
My cellphone/pda runs Windows Mobile 6.0 and has a built in GPS receiver. At the moment it's running with Tomtom's software, which is excellent and will give me vocal prmopts via a bluetooth headset, but it's only Europe.
I know you can now get Google maps working on Windows Mobile devices Google Mobile - Maps but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other GPS/mapping software that'll run with a Windows Mobile device. for the more out of the way places? I've got this dream, that aside from high quality photo taking, the one little gadget can do everything, so that I don't drown in electronica. |
Garmin has its own proprietary software to run Garmin maps on Windows mobile-based PDA's - see their website.
You can also use software to plot your position on scanned images of paper maps, so you could use Soviet maps of, for example, South America or the FSU, or French IGN maps of Africa, displayed on your screen with you current position, as well as all the normal GPS fuctionality like waypoints, routes, tracks etc. See The Official OziExplorer Web Site - GPS Mapping Software for Magellan, Garmin, Lowrance, Eagle, MLR Receivers and Touratech QV |
Oziexplorer CE runs under wuindows CE ..
Note Oziexplorer uses raster maps .. not vector maps .. Vector maps are what GPSes usally use .. but raster maps are easier for 'us' to produce - take photo of map (raster .. eg jpeg, gif etc) and then geo reference it (find at least 3 locations on teh map that you know the lat and long of and tell the software .. best if you also know the map projection) The Official OziExplorer Web Site - GPS Mapping Software for Magellan, Garmin, Lowrance, Eagle, MLR Receivers I'm certain there are others. |

Check out gpsVP, I run it on my XDA Orbit and it works quite well. I like that the track files it produces logging your route are pretty accurate yet fairly small compared to gpx (in my experience anyway). The monitors mode is kinda cool with info like sunset time etc - interesting to see what speed etc you are doing on a plane too.

Thanks for those, I'd forgotten all about OziExplorer to be honest, I'd looked at it before and got slightly lost in the "open-sourceness" of it, but looking again it's much clearer than I thought it was. Memory map looks good too, and I've downloaded the free trial so I'll see how that goes compared to Ozi, before I consider shelling out money. I do like free things.

Use MGMaps, it's uses google or yahoo maps but unlike the official one you can download the maps prior to hitting the road so you dont need a live internet connection. Best thing is the maps can be satellite or terrain!
