Buying a Garmin III+ in combination with Pocket PC

Hey Folks,

I am very interested in buying a Garmin III+.
The spec say it has a rather limited memory.capicity of 1.44 Mb. At least it sound very small, for nowadays standards (am i right? ).
I had the idea of using my Pocket PC to store Worldmap-data on and when needed, arriving in a specific region (Panamericana), download the required part on to the GPS ?
Is this possible ? Special considerations i should take into account ?
Thanks !

Gijs

As far as I know, you can only download maps on the 3+ with Garmins’ Map Source software. And that doesn't run on Pocket PC or other Windows CE PDA.

You can use the pocket PC however to transfer waypoints, routes and tracks to and from the 3+ on the road. This is actually advisable since you would have a backup of your data.

You can also store regular image maps on the pocket PC and use a navigation software like Ozi Explorer CE to display the maps and manage your waypoints and so on. You can even fix the pocket PC on the handle bar like next to the GPS and watch where you're going on the map.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask for more details info.

Hello,

I've had an E-mail from Garmin.
There's an online mapsource module coming within a month.

Don't have details yet.

Hi,

I don't know more at this moment.

I asked Garmin about the problem off loading new maps when you're on the road without a laptop.
I made the suggestion that it should be a good idea, to make a list with internet cafe's or Garmin dealers, where it's possible to load new maps.

I got the answer that there was an online solution within a month.

We just have to wait.
