Best recommended GPS unit for Mauretania?

Hello
which is the best recommended GPS unit for a trip to Mauretania?
Accuracy, durability, price? Will be travelling by 4x4.
Are there Mauretanian maps to download, Atar, Chinguetti, Tidjika and on to Mali?
thanx

The russian maps are raster maps - they cannot be downloaded to a gps. (You can use a pda and link that to a gps and then view the raster map .. another complecation) .. oh and the russian maps are .. 20? years old.

Rather than select 'the gps' - select a gps manufacture that has the best map for the areas you are visiting .. and that I think is garmin .. and the garmin map/s are not very good for that area of the world .. expect the roads shown to be out by a mile or two. I've compared them to the russian maps .. You can also get bob's Wanderlust map .. I think that is about the same as the garmin map presently .. but the chances are it will improve much faster than garmins map .. and yes it does go on to a garmin gps.

City maps ... nup .. not in that area of the world ... well not for gpses .. you can send your tracks to bod at wanderlust and he'll incorperate them onto the next version .. helps the next traveller..

GPS accuracy is not something that is that much different from one gps to another .. their performance under trees .. in tunnels .. inside buildings is another matter .. but should not be too much of a concern for you.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
