Trying to get May off, so playing with Brittany ferries website coming out at £730 (only cabins one way) for the dates I would like.

However, because I've travelled with LD lines from Portsmouth, I checked their prices to Le Havre, and it seems they do a "landbridge" service; Portsmouth-Le Havre drive/ride to St Nazaire-Gijon
ok, yes you need to drive/ride from Le Havre to Nazaire and back and yes it will take a day or longer to get to Spain (depending on ferries), but the cost is £367.

That's a fair saving if you can afford the extra time.

If you have 4 weeks off I'd ride down to Spain, you'll have 3 weeks to explore.

The ride down there isn't too bad it's not the M6/M1. There's a lot less traffic on the roads in France and the Aires are pretty good, if the weather is nice.

I've done Andorra to Le Mans in a day, you could push that out to Le Havre if you put the hours in so it's not that far, about 1,000 k's

Much of the direct route through France is on free motorways and dual carriageways, similarly the route through Spain, see Ferries to France/Spain, routes through France and Spain, Gibraltar information and ferries to Morocco

flyingdoctor/Tim; thanks for the replies and info, I've driven up/down through France on tolls and N roads, they do have a great network, I get about 24mpg on a run in my 110 so just looking at at all options.

Interestingly it's about a 480ml round trip Le Havre/St Nazaire, so cost of fuel/tolls misc and the cost of the ferries still saves me around £150.

I used the St Nazaire - Gijon ferry in June last year when I was heading down to ride the Pyrenees.

The ferry cost £120 for two people, two bikes and a cabin, it would have cost us more in fuel to ride down - and being a night crossing it's a "free night" of accomodation. Like spending a night in a hotel and waking up hundreds of miles further along!

The ferry was obviously designed for truckers - it's not 5 decks of shops, bars, restaurants and cinemas like the St Malo ferry or the Santander ones. However, the cabins were en-suite and in decent condition, the bar and restaurant were perfectly good and there was a small shop for any little bits and pieces you need.

I'd definitely use it again - much cheaper than the Santander ferry but saves a whole load of the route.

Le Harve Down to Malaga if you cross into Spain at the med side and use the 340 is do able in a single 24hr hit. Done this twice can save a lot of costs in hotels and food if you can put up with the cramp and manage the concerntration
