Morocco bound

Heading to Morocco mid october in a van with a bike on the back and looking at touring around 3 or 4 months. Which insurers will issue a green card for morocco ? i can`t find any definitive answers on line. Given the time we will spend there, buying at the border appears an expensive option considering we have 2 vehicles to insure.To add to my confusion i read a post here suggesting that a change to moroccan vehicle entry rules would prevent older vehicles from entering the country.Given the amount of people that go to Morocco each year from the UK this info should be out there.Any advice welcome..cheers

So far that's one unconfirmed rumour. I shall be there next week and will see if I can find out more.

I believe NFU will supply you with Morocco insurance. If so I’ll change before I go next time, can’t be bothered with the hassle of searching out insurance whilst you’re in Morocco. Took me until the second day last time. Not a pleasant feeling.

But what are we likely to pay for 2 weeks insurance in morocco at the moment so we don't fleeced when we arrive??

And how close to Tangier Med will we find some where to sell it to us??

After you come through customs at Tanger Med, there are several white portacabins in the middle of the open area. Two of them are banks where you can change money (I take GBP from the UK), the other is the insurance office.

950 Dirhams (about £75) for a month's insurance for a 4x4. Cash only.

Immediately as in 20m! You won't get fleeced, their rates are printed for all to see for each category and each time period up to 6 months. I should have taken a pic of that piece of paper, if you happen to remember would you mind taking one, or just writing them down and posting when you pass!?

Our ferry from Barcelona was delayed and arrived about 6 hours late, customs took us 5 hours for some weird reason, so around midnight reaching the office by which time it was shut. There doesn't seem to be any reason why you can't just walk through the customs vehicle check area to purchase insurance while your vehicle is still queueing, you don't actually leave the "secure" area till maybe 50m further up. Ask a Douane official first and he may wave you up there (on foot!)?

I may be wrong, but the insurance periods may be something like 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and although the step from 3 to 6 is nothing like the same proportionally as the rest, 4 months isn't available?

Having a camper we waited in the Gare Maritime carpark till the office opened. It took us 36 hours to find the man, who was apparently there but had just popped out for xyz. Noone had seen him though, we had just about every official in the Gare on the look out, and when he did turn up he came running I think theres an office in Assilah near the Maroc Telecom shop, and theres one in the old port I'm sure, but finding it, and if its as "not quite open" like the one we were within 100 yards of, we had loads of time so stayed put.

When the OP says 3/4 months you know they only give you 90 days initially? Leaving Morocco into Ceuta and back just for a further 90 day stamp is supposed to be simple, but I'm not keen if that turns into a further 5 hour wait.



Chris Scott in Morocco Overland says you can get a new 90 day stamp at a police station, has anyone done that? Any info welcomed?!

Last year when me and the boss went, the office was closed, so we just didnt bother....we never got stopped, nobody asked for proof of insurance on way back in.

I know that if we had an accident, we'd have been screwed, but there u go!

Try Carole Nash insurance for a green card for Morocco, they were certainly doing it last year, they quoted for my RE Bullet. It was a ridiculously high quote for the insurance as the Bullet wasn't listed (or maybe the 28bhp power output was too much for them to consider insuring ).
Computer say no in other words.
The green card bit was £80. I didn't take their quote, but a more 'conventional' bike or car should be priced a little more realistically.

Carole Nash is a broker, not an insurance company, so it depends which company your policy is with. The link I provided on post#2 gives the most complete info I'm aware of.
