Sleeping in tent in Morocco - make sense?
 

We are planning short trip across Morocco end april-beginning may, about 9 days. Absolute most of it on paved roads.
So we ran into a bit of argument - do we need to take tents and try to just sleep in middle of nowhere or stop pretending and just stay in hotels, auberges etc.? :)

What would you recommend?

if your going off road wild camping is well worth the experience

On our first trip we took loads of camping gear but ended up staying in Auberges most of the time because they were so cheap, with good food (usually tagine) and great hospitality.

We didn't camp until we ventured further out into the desert.

Hard to see the needs for tents. If you want to sleep in a tent, there are loads of places doing "berber" tents which are already set up.

I think I would bring my own sleeping bag, or a sleeping bag liner and my own pillow case though...

I would take a tent as there are many places to wild camp not too far from the tarmac. If you take a tent you have the option.

I probably will take tent (at the end of the day it is only 2.5 kg) and sleeping bag just for case we want to try :) but try to stick to usual accomodations.

We just finished up our south east asia portion of our trip and for the first 2 months we did not have our tent with us (we left it in Bangkok as we were going with the cheap accommodation thinking) and although that was absolutely right, we missed the tent! Once we had it again we found we rode further and no longer had to worry about if we would find accommodation or not. Plus like the warden said, it is often worth it just for the experience. We could have stayed in a decent guesthouse for less than 5 Euro but why miss out on this:

I must admit - all of my youth I used every opportunity to hike around back then Soviet Union and spent quite a few nights in tents :) so I can't say I really missing it but for sake of being first time on bike on African continent I read all advices and just in case packed tent, sleeping bag and mat. All together comes to about 4 kg and tiny pack and I am OK to carry it even if I will not use it.

sleeping in a tent is exellent .you will see the stars and the moon which you don no see in the city

Wild camping is possible in the forest/mountain/semi-arid areas but there are also many parts of Morocco where the land is fully utilised and wild camping is not possible.

There's no point in camping with the sort of tour you envisage.

Well, we are going in a few weeks and fully intend on camping whenever we cant find very cheap accomodation or end up somewhere beautiful enough to warrant it

Been all over the world and always found somewhere safe to camp
