New Ferry Service ..layounne To Fuerteventura In The Canary Islands

Just in case it helps anyone or for info..there is a new ferry service, passengers and vehicles that runs between TARFAYA in MOROCCO to FUERTEVENTURA, CANARY ISLANDS ( SPAIN ) Its a 3 hour 30 minute crossing, from this island, its fairly easy to get to the others, Tenerife, Las Palmas, etc...From Tenerife and Las Palmas you can get a ferry direct to Cadiz, Spanish mainland and from Tenerife in the summer you can get a ferry to the island of Madeira ( Portuguese )..from there another to Lisbon...
may be useful as you may know these islands have holiday flights to most of Europe all year round...might help for any logistic probs you may have or getting home in a hurry if you are on the West Coast....cheers.
The ferry company is a Spanish company ARMAS.

Certainly island hopping in the Atlantic would be a novel (and expensive?) way of departing Northern Africa for Europe, and it is a good way of getting to the Canary Islands themselves.
One potential problem is the ferry company pulling the plug on the service; as they do for other routes that may not pay too well - is this definitely available for 12 months of the year, or could it be a seasonal effort by ARMAS?

ferry prices

They have been going for about three months now....it was supposed to start last summer but never did....at the mo they put the timetable on the website for the next 5 or 6 weeks in advance....we dont really have a season here in the canaries..its busy with tourism all year round ( and warm too )..
Prices are 125 uk pounds for two pax and a motorbike each-way..expensive yes for a 3 hour 40 mins crossing of 60 miles but the alternative is 36 hour ferry back to cadiz, another ferry across to Tangiers and few hundred miles back south on the bike.....get the map out those of you unsure and you will see what I mean....its popular with Moroccan other Africans that live and work here...........cheers..

New service. Las Palmas - Laayoune

It seems that there may be a new Canary Islands - Morocco ferry service.

Whilst holidaying in Tenerife last week I picked a copy of 'Island Connections', one of English language newspapers. It contained articles about the ill-fated Naveria Armas Ferry Line who are renewing their fleet and also an unrelated article about Western Sahara activists which makes mention of the ferry service between Las Palmas on Gran Canaria and Laayoune in Southern Morocco .

The new Las Palmas - Layounne ferry is mentioned on the Naviera Armas website, although as of today there was no timetable shown. According to a thread on Lonely Planet the service may be restarting soon.

As someone who has often thought of living in the Canary Islands, to thought of a direct connection to Africa would be more than a little interesting.
