Going south, there's a 3 star hotel an hour before Terfaya. In Akhfennir, just before the Khnifiss N.P. Impeccable...clean....excellent beds even! Name is Sahara Beach, built in 2012. 280 for a single with breakast, off season.

dommiek 3 Feb 2015 15:17

Stayed at the following hotels/auberges in October 2014. Traveled solo for a week, met my girlfriend at Agadir Airport so some of the room prices are for two people.

Erfoud Hotel Jnane N31.26.344 W004.13.900 above a restaurant on the main road, car park to rear, 200dh inc. b'fast. OK but restaurant can be noisy.

Ouarzazate Hotel Amlal N.30.55.249 W006.55.044 on a quiet street to the west of town. Parked the bike in a small store room (locked but only space for 1 bike), security guard on reception, b'fast and room 200dh. Friendly, OK. Would have stayed at Bikershome but Peter was away.

Mararkech Hotel Farouk, Avenue Hassan II, N31.37.921 W008.00.869 air con but not working very well, 250dh inc. b'fast. parked bike on pavement directly outside entrance. Cheap for Marrakech.

Marrakech Hotel Corail, Avenue Hassan II, not far from the above. Air con, locked underground carpark, fairly comfortable, 550dh double inc.b'fast. Worth paying the extra for the parking.

Tarroudant Hotel Tiout N30.28.155 W008.52.562 comfortable, small balcony, air con, tv. 250dh inc.b'fast. parking outside in large carpark.
Recommended

Ait Benhaddou Auberge La Baraka, N31.02.571 W007.07.811 400dh for two inc. evening meal and b'fast. Lovely place to stay, friendly, good food and views, parked bike inside Auberge, facility to have washing done Highly recommended

Zagora Hotel La Palmerie end of the main street next to the famous "Timbuktu 52 Jours" sign. An old favourite although it's getting more run down each visit. Parked bike inside hotel, night security, friendly staff, bar and beer (if they haven't run out) double room and b'fast for two 210dh. Recommended

Tamtattouchte (10km north from Todra Gorge) Auberge Baddou N31.40.223 W005.32.872 Comfortable, pool, great food, friendly staff, parking in grounds. 250dh per person inc b'fast and evening meal.
Great place to stay, highly recommended.

Igherm Hotel Rendezvous N30.05.380 W008.27.623. 80dh for two. Very basic accommodation, food was ok. You'll probably skip using the shower here and sleep with your biking gear on as we did. Think it's the only hotel in town so serves a purpose but not the sort of place you'd choose to take your girlfriend or wife (although I did and she's still talking to me).

Sidi Ifni Hotel Bellevue N29.22.893 W10.10.612 Old colonial type hotel perched on the cliff with great sea views. Restaurant with beer and wine, very comfortable rooms, great views, car park outside entrance, friendly staff, 200dh double and b'fast 30dh. Recommended

Tangier Hotel Picaso. City centre not far from the souk above the port. N35.46.778 W005.48.742 Large rooms, tv, air con and a locked underground carpark. 250dh. Recommended because of the safeparking, can be noisy at night as there's a few bars outside.

IBIS Hotels Always a safe bet and found in major cities. Can be expensive but deals available if booking well in advance on-line. We saved about 50% at one this way. Stayed at Meknes, Agadir and the Ibis Budget (about 100dh cheaper) in Tangier.

Laayoune
Hotel Jodesa
100m north of CTM bus office on opposite side of the street.
GPS N27.153029, W13.196612 (approx)
Very pleasant people. Single room DH160 with shared bathroom. Clean and well maintained. 160DH for en-suite
Parking outside on pavement with guardien. Set-back from street kerb, cafe next-door for extra security. Nice breakfast in cafe too.

Tan Tan Hotel Biranzarane
A few hundred metres from town centre. Next door to what I assumed was an army barracks (all the khaki on duty) but it seems it's the Palais Royale
GPS N28.43979 W11.10614
Many room with no external window; window(with shutters) onto internal corridor. Probably very hot in summer
Moto parking kindly offered on private patio next to front door
DH 70 shared bathroom

Kasba Tadla Hotel les Alles
GPS N32.59685 W6.26298
Moto parking in internal courtyard (via narrow door)
Single room with small balcony DH70. Shared bathroom
I really liked K Tadla; a well-maintained kasba, a few little parks.
(Who's the Frenchman who abandoned his Yamaha - a TDM I think - in a corner of the courtyard? )

Sidi Slimane Hotel Aymen
Modern hotel, air-con, restaurant, terrace, swimming pool (empty)
Double room, en-suite incl buffet breakfast DH330 - after some negotiation, and it was low season.
GPS N34.25980 W5.92083
Secure parking out back.

Chefchaouen
Riad Baraka.
booked through hostel world. Lovely riad in old medina. Secure parking outside medina. Very old place with a lot of charm, fantastic roof area. No single rooms, so not good value for a 1 unless you went in the mixed dorm. Run by an english lady and her sons. They do beers too!
250 dh, including breakfast but would be the same for 2 people. Has its own website.

Taza
de la Gare.
on corner by roundabout next to station.
secure garage. Modern rooms with ac, tvs and showers. Nice and cool.
200dh, but I suspect it would be the same for 2 people as I was in a double room.

Beni Tajjite
Beni Zitti guest house.
this town is said to have no accomadation, but I was fortunate enough to meet Musapha, who owns this hotel. There are a number of rooms with various facilities and I was made to feel most welcome with an evening meal home cooked for me. A modern building, wifi, tvs etc situated just outside the town on the Boudenib road. If coming from the north, ask at the Green Oil fuel station for Mustapha. He is also building a luxury hotel here, not sure when it will be finished though.
300dh for a twin room, with breakfast. Good value home cooked dinners too. A real slice of Maroccan hospitality! I think he also has a more basic hostel in the town.
email:benzitti2008@gmail.com

Efroud
Camping Tifina
5kms south of Efroud. Decent campsite with plenty of facilities, swimming pool, etc, some shaded plots which I managed to bag because it was quiet. No bog paper.
80dh/ night.

Tetouan:
Riad Dalia - very nice view from the roof terrace. Paid 240MAD including breakfast, WIFI and a shared shower. Nicely situated within the Medina. Good Tajine (Menu for 100MAD)!

Chefchaouen:
Hotel/Hostel Souika - again nicely located inside the old Medina. Very much liked the honest and laid back attitude as well as the opportunity to meet some backpackers and other travellers. As this is Chaouen though, most guests seem to be busy with dope, which I found a bit annoying but...well... Dorm bed: 60MAD/night. Rooftop accommodation for 45MAD (guess that's the 25 bed dorm).

Fez:
Riad Nassim - amazing value for money! 300MAD for 2 nights including breakfast, good Wifi (on rooms), A/C and ensuite bathroom! Owner is very nice and his concierge/ helper, Abdul (I guess) is fantastic. You can order a sandwich in the middle of the night and he'll walk into the Medina and get some for a fair price. Also really nice roof terrace. Cons - I'm not a fan of staying in Fez Medina. Be aware of the hassle. There is an overall attitude of ripping tourists over and people even tell you not to trust anyone. You are also completely relying on guides as it is impossible to find your ways through the medina without guides.

Midelt:
Hotel Bougafer - nicely situated for those wanting to go for the Cirque du Jaffar (although not as nice as the Auberge Jaffar). Nice view from the roof terrace, and Midelt is overall quite a nice place to stay at - no hassels, good views, nice climate, nice people and everything you need in terms of food, petrol, cash etc. The guard asked me to park my bike inside the marked in the middle of the night because of the lack of light due to frequent power cuts. Found that quite nice! 110MAD/night incl. breakfast. WIFI is not reliable though.

Ilmichil:
Hotel Restaurant Izlane - nice room with ensuite bathroom, good WIFI and on site parking. Ilmichil itself is quite a nice place to stay at - not as remote as some of the mountain Gites (you got markets, cafés etc.) but doesn't feel overly touristy as well. The Kefta at the Hotel is amazing! Some 240MAD/night incl. dinner and breakfast.

Taounate : hotel du lac : you can only sleep, no breakfast. Very clean, very nice, toilet and showers are good and clean. It's in a small alley and the parking is at the back. The guardian does his job very good and literally keeps an eye on "his" parking lot (I could see him through the window when I had to pee in the middle of the night).
It was 256 dirham for a room with three single beds. I doubt you can get any cheaper (and as clean!) as this hotel.

Not the cheapest, but I really recommend this place because of the nice people.

Marrakech:
le-relais
french owners. Nice place, camping and tents for rent. A bit outside of marrakech which makes it quieter. Good place if you travel by car (safe parking etc).
They sell beer!!

Have to say this place is ideal to stay in Merzouga.

Just south of the town look out on your left for the sign "Hotel Kasbah Touareg"

Said and the guys are good to be with and he is not pushy even though he offers Tours in his 4x4 and Camels as everyone does here!! WiFi is nice and fast..which is a surprise!!!

Camping here is cheap..the same as all over Merzouga and the showers/toilets are clean. I am happy to recommend this place and if you want to contact him first his number is. 00212662578403

From Nov-Dec 2015

Updates from last year's post

Marrakech - Gueliz (nr Mac D's)
Hotel Toulousain
Still OK for the Loc convenience. Good breakfast, lots of restos nearby. Great wifi right to the rooms.
250d pp for an old-style en suite (+ 50 for a 2nd person). None en suites also, plus newer suites. No parking.

Ouarzazate south
Hotel du Vallee, Easy to find and not so bad really but now 280d pp, secure bike parking. Heating/a-con rooms. wifi in reception.

Assaragh
Auberge des Etoiles - spacious dar; simple charme rustique, bikes in lock-up

Tazenacht
Hotel Bab Sahara, pizzas, secure courtyard parking, wifi-ish in the cafe.

Tamnougalte
Kasbah Itrane. Now this has a terrace delices

Tizi n’Test
Dar Elmouahidines, blue place on R203 to Tizi n’Test., 30km before pass.
200d hb. Small rooms, can get chilly, but handy.
Destroyed by quake 2023

New places tried, noted or checked out

If you're in the upper Ait Bouguemez valley (south of Azilal) there are several rustic trekkers' gites in the string of villages that make up this commune.

Stopped in to check out the remote Gite de Cathedral, 10km piste from Tillouguite where the tar starts. 200d hb. Rustic as you'd expect but nowhere else for miles. Presumably popular with climbers. Several small 3-bed rooms plus a double and a 4. One bathroom/toilet. Big fireplace that hopefully gets lit in winter.

Fint, 12km SW or Ouarzazate
Terraces des Delices, Pass through a new suburb, turn off and a quick river crossing just before arrival. It's a terrace all right, but not as delices as I expected for the €30 hb in tiny rooms. Stayed again a few years later - switched the price on departure. Won't stay again.

Foum Zguid
Auberge Iriki - signed south end of Foum Zguid, on a side street.
Stayed here years ago but no all-night no barking dogs this time, just surprisingly good wifi if you're close to the cyber next door. 180d hb. Warm welcome, closed courtyard parking and usual good food.

Also asked about Hotel El Fayja by the Afriquia 15km north of FZ - was told 400d ro. Have since stayed here when stranded. Was OK odd place; no one stays here.

Marrakech, north on the N09, opposite the stadium
Le Relais de Marrakech
Lovely haven but I thought a bit expensive @ 35euro for a ropey tent room only. Good resto. I guess it's the easy parking and camping close to Marrakech that must make it popular. A bit of signposting from the north would not hurt and incorrectly positioned on Google maps (link above correct).

Ksar Tissergate - 8km north of Zagora, signed east off the road.
Hotel Kasbah Ziwana
Genuine mud-brick place accessed on foot along the cool tunnels of the part-ruined old kasbah overlooking Oued Draa palmerie. Great terrace lunch. 250d hb. Parking in a plot outside with guardian, but still a bit exposed for baggage bikes. Good option outside Zagora babylon.

Tissint
Kasbah Tissint, signed at the bend north end of town.
Yet another classy but deserted new hotel overlooking the oued. Caught them by surprise for a nice salad lunch, A/c rooms round a pool said to be 250 hb. wifi.
At least one cheapie in the town's main street, also.

Nr Zouweiat Ahansal, 75km SE of Azilal
Dar Ahansal, (1660m). Lovely place with exceptional attention to detail inside and out. 280d hb (but 100d single supplement). Only one there and an odd atmosphere of suspicion developed, especially from the owner. But food was great and not charged for teas and water, as other places of this calibre might do. Dongle wifi. Fire place in room but no firewood so chilly in December. Possibly another kasbah in the village too.

Hello

It was first time for me to be in Morocco without own experiencies so I was on the safe side with accomondations and secure parking and reliability was in priority. The prices are not always low but still I share the experiencies maybe from any reason it can be usefull to someone. Sometimes I made prebooking sometimes improvised.

Asilah – Berbari Maison d Hótes
Guest house located some km’s from Asilah and from the highway on the countryside. Secure parking in the backyard. 2km off road route which can be difficult to ride in case of rain. The service and food was ok but that was my most expensive accomondation 600 DH incl.room, breakfast and dinner. Wifi available the staff was young ladies, they were firendly.

Marrakesh – Le Relais du Marrakesh
Camping which offer also rooms. It has pool also and wifi. 40 Eur incl breakfast. Restaurant offer dinner. The city center 10 min drive from the camping by taxi which runs hourly from the camping (60DH).

Taiouline – Hotel Safran
On the side of the main road. Bike parking in the closed backyard. 25 Eur with breakfast. They can offer dinner which was ok. Firendly staff.

Ait ben Haddou – Kasbah du Jardin
Good place with young friendly staff. Good conversations with them. 350 DH incl. room, breakfast, dinner. Wifi was good in the restaurant. Parking secure in the backyard where they offer also places for campers.

Hassi Labied village just near to Merzouga – Camping Ocean de Dunes
The place I liked the most on my tour. Run by berber brothers and they are friendly and helpfull very much. The camp has basic but clean rooms. Spent two nights there 260DH /night incl room, breakfast, dinner. I had the best food in Morocco here. Located as near as possible to the dunes. Wifi runs well. Hope to be back.

Midelt – Riad Villa Midelt
Off side from city center on a quiet place with parking in the yard. For a biker a bit fancy but in the same time very stylish decoration. 30 Eur with breakfast. Wifi was hectic a bit.

Meknes – Riad dar Zadine
10 min drive from city center (15 DH by taxi). Closed parking place. 400 DH incl breakfast. Arrived a bit late so dinner was not possible. Still lovely place.

Tanger - Camping Miramonte
The camping offers room too for 300 DH. Run by local guys in the name of the owner. This place was quite a mistake. The room was in bad shape. Go there in case of emergency only. The only advantage that near to Tanger Med. For sure with some more research better accomondation can be found with same secure parking.

Hotel Suggestions

My viewpoint on the following various places;

Marrakech
Hotel Toulousain
Hotel Toulousain
300MAD includes breakfast
A good, clean hotel with fast wifi and traditional style rooms. No aircon. Very close to Loc 2 Roues and located near to cafes, bars, Starbucks and a range of shops. Helpful and pleasant staff. Recommended. Motorbike parking not straight forward, unless you can squeeze a bike in the courtyard.

Ouarzazate
Hotel La Vallee
300MAD includes breakfast
Modern hotel with swimming pool, restaurant and wifi. Rooms have aircon. Good traditional food. Bikes can be left behind locked doors under the watchful eye of a guardian. Recommended.

Todra Gorge
Auberge Le Festival
800MAD includes breakfast and dinner
A touch pricey but the rooms are quirky cave style and the location is a treat in the gorge. Very friendly staff and you really can’t go wrong with a stay here. Great location for travelling north or south through the gorge. Limited wifi and no-aircon. Beer available, at a price. I've stayed here a few times now and it's a gem not to be missed. Always seem to be a couple of our groups staying here. Bit or music and banter in the evenings. Recommended

Merzouga
Ksar Bicha
500MAD includes breakfast and dinner
Great location overlooking the dunes. Rooms have aircon and wifi. Hotel has a decent pool, café style bar and restaurant. Plenty of room to leave bikes right outside reception. Helpful and friendly staff. Recommended.

Zagora
Kasbah Sirocco
200MAD including breakfast
A great hotel with modern facilities. Swimming pool, wifi, alcoholic bar, restaurant etc. Clean modern rooms with decent showers. Located just outside the town. Good dinner in the evening at sensible price. Guardian for bikes left at the front overnight.

Tazenacht
Hotel Bab Sahara
100MAD for a room
A rather chaotic hotel right in the centre of town. It’s cheap, and tatty but has a pool, wifi and can provide pizza. Rooms and bathrooms are basic, sheets were dirty and tatty. But hey, it’s cheap as chips and handy for the fantastic trails around the area. Busy social hang out for the locals. Bikes can be left in a locked car park.

Tata
Hôtel La Renaissance
150MAD for the room
Looks good from the outside, but very tired and tatty inside. Rooms are tiny and the bathroom was very basic even for Morocco. Might have been the season, but no food available. Wifi in the lobby. Bikes can be left in locked garage. Bit shabby, other hotels might prove better. I wouldn’t bother again.

Taroudant
Hotel Salama
200MAD for the room
Great hotel in the centre of town. Rooms are clean and modern. Wifi, good showers, café/restaurant with a relaxed feel. Bike parking at the front under the watchful eye of a guardian. Staff very friendly and helpful. Very recommended. Good food and menu wider that the usual suspects. Highly recommended.

Taliouine
Auberge Le Safran
200MAD for the room
A basic hostel style location run on solar power. Rooms are basic and the electricity supply is limited. When meals are being cooked the lights and aircon are switched off. Small pool out of the back. Bikes can be left behind locked doors and a guardian is on duty. Quite a fun place and the staff are good. Food was good traditional fare. Wifi, sort of. Recommended, but don’t take it too seriously and you’ll have a good time.
