Morocco to dakar.
 

Hello everyone.

kind of just thinking out loud here as I have just managed to get an extra two weeks onto my Morocco trip.

As a huge bike fan Dakar has always had a draw for me. I was wondering how easy logistics wise a run to the place would be? I have set the bike up well for Morocco any way. I believe there is tarmac all the way down, so is it as easy as just point the right way and go?

Any hints, experiences would be greatly appreciated.

imho, if I had 2 extra weeks, I would stay in Morocco. I can understand why people would want to go to Dakar, and mostly it's the same reason they want to go to the north cape or Timbouctou, because of the mythology. But truth is, there is not that much to see, and even the road up to these places aren't the nicest. Morocco has it all and is a much more a bikers paradise than Mauritania or Senegal.
Logistic problems: it's all tarmac, but from Morocco it's 2500 km down one road to the border of Senegal, which is prety boring. Then you will have the pleasure to deal with one of the worst borders in Africa, Rosso, or you can take the detour to Diama.
When you get to Dakar, you will see it's a big dirty and congested city.
On the plus side: you would have an oportunity to get a glimpse of the real Africans, but 2 weeks will have you rush in and out.
But hey, this is just my opinion, lots of people do this 'adventure' every year and have lots of fun.

I agree with the above. I drove back from the Gambia in 10 long hard days so certainly it can be done, but it's just killing the miles on the tarmac to reach a flea bitten toilet full of con men and crooks (ok, maybee thats a bit disingenious, but basically it's as bad as any other big city)

If you want to go further afield how about a bit of touring on the sahara pistes in mauritania? Still a hell of a long way though, and you can get 4 weeks in morrocco and barely scratch the surface. In that time you could be riding (driving) on snow, rocks and sand. There are wonderful cities, mountains, coast and desert. It has everything you could need in spades

Can't think of one good reason to go to Dakar again. Nasty place. If you are after a taste of Senegal, St Louis is a much better place to get it, and you don't have the drive all the way down to Dakar. (But DON'T stay at the Zebrabar camp site!!)

I agree. Everything is better than Senegal and Dakar.
After 35 days trip in Senegal, Gambia and Guinee-Bissau please leave behind Senegal and go down or stay in wonderfully Mauritania.

Thank you for your answers. I shalll not be bothering, it seems to just not be worth it. I'm sure a whole month within Morocco will be an adventure in itself!
