Hi all
This might be a daft question but i'm thinking of going to Morocco in June.do i need to get a visa,or any special paperwork for the bike.and how do you go on for insurance
And is it as great a place as people say. O I'll be on my own, if i can't find any one to come along for the ride

I think you should reconsider.

Its daft going to Morocco in June ... its very hot. If you are on your own, in riding gear, it can be dangerous. It is a great place .. but summer is not the time to be there.

As for the rest, its useful to tell us what nationality you are and what registration the bike has when asking questions about visas and bike paperwork ... but assuming you and the bike are UK papered ...

No visa, no special paperwork, and usually use a decent chain for insurance. Some insurers will cover you there from memory ... hopefully another respondant will be able to advise.

I'm going in late July / early August. Again, it's the only time I can go, unless I wait for retirement!

@mike turner: as Colebatch wrote, it is too hot in the summer. We were there this June/July. No problems for the Atlas, but in Sahara region was over 47 deg.C, on moments over 50. In all afternoons we had regular sand storms with very poor visibility. Later we had afternoon rain showers in high Atlas.

Well good luck guys ... I was there in September last year and it was still 43 C even after summer had passed.

Dont go too far off road then, especially if you are alone. Theres a recent thread on here about a couple of guys who died there (last year I think) after having trouble in sand dunes ... near Merzouga from memory ... from heat exhaustion.

Seriously - Do not plan on much off road unless its in the mountains. When it gets above 40 there, it becomes very dangerous very fast ... especially for a solo motorcyclist.

Mid thirties in mezouga today still. If you must go in June heed the advice keep to the coast and high atlas and the temps will be more tolerable

I've used the Anti Atlas for relief from the heat for a few days, also it's one of the nicest parts of Morocco to visit IMO.

I Will be - again can now say - next June/July in Morocco. Had 46 degrees Celcius experience this year near Merzouga, but it was not that bad for me with proper gears. Just needed to drink enough.

Have not that much possibilities to take 4-5 weeks vacation than June/July, so that is the timeframe for this excercise!

I'm planning a trip to Morocco next year, I hope to be south of the Atlas for the first week in June.

The main concern will be the heat so any kind of off-road riding is not to be recommended; I'm considering flying and renting for a few days or taking my road bike as opposed to my XR.

I had a great time there in January this year (perfect riding conditions), and spent three weeks there in April four years ago when it was bordering on too hot, but just bearable; If you travel in June stick to the roads or less adventurous pistes.....

It was June this year actually; it has been an exceptionally hot year for Morocco, just as it has been a very wet year for the UK!
The lessons of the two deaths are timeless (it will happen again, to someone, somewhere - such is life).

Funny how people have a different perspective depending on when you went, for me it was the coldest and wettest April that I have know this year, pistes were in a very poor state and we were cold in the Western Sahara and there were floods in the desert, someone who travelled the same route two weeks later may be reporting something completely different though.

In June last year we a had 4 week stretch during which the lowest temp at night was 32 deg C, daytime was hard work and we were on 4 wheels with loads of (hot!) water, rehydration sachets etc. It got too much and we headed for the coast. No way would i do that on a bike :funmeterno:

Sorry if this is stating the obvious but...

It's possible to get relief from the heat in a day by gaining height in Morocco, roughly 2c drop per 1000ft rise (7c drop per 1000m)

The 32deg 4 week figure happens to stick in my mind, I'd just got a little weather station thingy that stored highs and lows. And that the LCD blacks out at 60deg C cab temps :(

I do remember finally heading west towards Agadir, the temperature dropped about 10degC in an hours driving, going from bonkers to comfortably hot. We weren't sure how much the temp would change, but it was so much better we kicked ourselves for not doing it sooner!

Gee, it's amazing how people assume that Morocco = sand and dunes. As mentioned, the Atlas mountains are fantastic for riding, there's so much to do there! And you certainly don't want to go there in winter, I had snow on a pass last March. And the Mediterranean coast sure isn't going to attract people during the cold and wet days.

In Merzouga in March this year it was a little coldish for me in the evening when having a sundowner beer, but just great when riding hard.

There just isn't one "good" time for the whole of Morocco. YMMV.

Heading to morocco July 2013. Leaving from Dublin on 23 July and meeting mate in London and then on to morocco. Happy to meet up with like minded travellers for some of trip.
