Morocco first timers

Hi all
We are first time explorers to morocco. Does anyone recommend a gps unit ? What is the easiest , less stressful port to land in morocco?
And most importantly is it ok to drink alcohol on campsites and while wild camping ( we will bring it into country)

And lastly any advise on the must see scenic spots!

You should be able to read it without being registered.

GPS unit: depends on what you intend to do. Do you stay on roads or main pistes? Then it's not really needed, but nice to record your tracks. Garmin has road (City Navigator Middle East & Northern Africa) and topo maps (Topo Maroc) for the region which are not without flaws but not bad. You can also download free maps from OpenStreetMaps. Tip: when entering cities, take into account that the units don't have an "avoid medina" setting...

My latest experiences with entering by ferry are Tanger Port so can't help you with that one.

Alcohol: ok in most cases and when not allowed it will be mentioned somewhere. Just ask the owner. Camping wild, what we always did is drink our daily apéritif in an opaque cup. A bit of discretion is a good thing, like the drinking moroccans do themselves.

Hello and welcome to the HUBB,

For on road navigation, a simple Garmin Nuvi with the Morocco SD card will suffice. For off road the free OSM maps are very detailed - you can run them on an iPad with the MotionXHD app.

For first time visitors, TangerMed is pretty straight forward and hassle-free entry to Morocco. See other posts for exiting...

There's no problem drinking alcohol on campsites or when wild camping - just don't overdo it.

As for scenic spots - take your pick. Atlas mountains, cedar forests, Todra & Dades Gorges, Erg Chegagga, Erg Chebbi. For cities, Fes rather than Marrakech. Follow some of the routes in Chris's book and you'll be travelling through wonderful scenery.

GPS is a useful safety net; I use one quite widely in Europe. On my first trip to Morocco last year, I only used a paper map and never once found it difficult to navigate. As has been stated above, Chris Scott's book is great. I would defer to Peter on all things Morocco, but I personally prefer Marrakech to Fez. Parts of Fez, to me, we're far too 'Western'. If I wanted Burger King or Pizza Hut I'd stay here!
