West Sahara desert stay

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are going to be in Morocco in March. As part of our trip we would like to spend some time (~3 days/2 nights) in the sand desert in the West Sahara.

We are looking for a safe (i.e. landmine free) and beautiful area...any recommendations?

And/or, are there any reputable companies or contacts that organize stays in the desert down there?

Many thanks,

OS

Dahkla would be my choice, set on a peninsula surrounded by salt marshes.

Tim is certainly right, the Dakhla peninsula is a beautiful place. If you don't want to go that deep, I recommend the Camp Bedouin, between Tarfaya and Laâyoune. Beautifully located at the Sebkha Oum Dba, good food and drinks and they run tours to the surrounding salt lakes and dunes.

Cap Bedouin

Hi,

The Camp Bedouin is a great place to stay, with good food (try the Tajine Chameau), friendly people, and a bath with a view:

For safe pistes use the Gandini guide with it's waypoints. It's in French (but the waypoints aren't).

Happy travels,

Gee

Thank you for the suggestions. We will be in West Sahara all together for a good week. Dakhla is a planned destination but we would like to spend a few days right in the sand desert, away from the sea.

Given the limited time and preparation on my end I assume that we need to hire someone to take us in. I will check out Camp Bedouin. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Best

Fort Boujerif
Great tagine de chameau aux pruneaux and close the the entrance to Plage Blanche.
(getting an accurate TIDE time table from Pierre is a really wise idea if venturing out on the beach with 2 or more wheels... unless its amphibious!)

Great place but a bit north of the WS, well worth the stop on the way down and the drive on the beach is stunning

Don't know about that exact one, but there are many such abandoned camps inland the Western Sahara. As said, usually nice places to camp, quite useful when the wind is strong, but I will suggest due caution moving around ex-army installations inland the WS, as many such places were protected by bands of minefields and not all are cleared even today.

I will recommend using civil "bivouacs" that are built in many places with the idea that a traveler can find a shelter for the night. Usually around wells, but some of them also "in the middle of the nowhere". Here's one example.
