Green card in Morocco/Spain

Could anyone tell me if the Moroccan or Spanish border/customs authorities require you to show a green card (vehicule insurance)? And if so, was this when you entered Spain or when you entered Morocco (which ferry/route and when...)?

Hope it won't be an issue if you don't have one which is still valid (I will go from Morocco to Spain, don't know yet which ferry/crossing).

Thanks a lot!

Travelling from Spain to Morocco, Spanish customs don't normally ask to see proof of insurance and can't remember being asked by Moroccan customs since the insurance office closed at Ceuta years ago. Travelling the other way, I've never been asked.

At TangerMed the insurance office is after the customs area anyway when you get off the ferry.

If you haven't got a valid green card, you haven't got insurance. NOT recommended!

The only place I have ever been asked for my insurance document was at the Dakhla roundabout.

You go through police controls (unless done on the ship), then through customs. There then used to be a final check that you had insurance but this hasn't been done for years, ever since a right royal cockup involved the insurance offices at Ceuta being removed.

Thanks, guys.

Just to make sure: I will get into Morocco from Mauritania. Indeed, since my green card is expired, I drive without insurance. Absolutely not what I wanted, but it is a side effect from our government's/insurance companies rules. Usually, I buy third party insurance at every border to avoid any possible problem.

Is it possible to buy third party insurance in Morocco upon arrival from Mauritania?

Do I understand all of you correct that most probably the Moroccan border authorities in the north won't ask you about a green card and that very certainly the Spanish authorities do not ask you about a green card?

Thanks again, this problem is one to tacke; one of the greatest issues so far on my roundtrip through Africa...

One year ago, going from Maroc into Ceuta, Spain, a official at the passport check asked about Green Card but we didn't know that was what he was asking. I think he said "Casa verta" I shrugged and held up my hands to indicate I didn't have a clue what he wanted. After a few more"Casa verta" he threw up his hands and let us go.
We had the insurance paper but didn't know that was what he wanted.

You can always get green card before entering Spain from Arisa in Luxemburg via the internet. They will email a copy and you can get it printed. You'll need a copy of the vehicle papers and passport but if you have a digital camera, this is easy. Internet cafe's have printers.

Otherwise, go carefully, a bit slower and take no risks. The chances of running into someone are much less then and they're pretty low anyway.

Ali.

At Ceuta there is now [a few days ago] a new insurance office on the right as you exit the final border control/gate into Morocco.

Thanks again. My main concern is not driving without insurance (although this might be stupid; please be aware that I did buy an expensive insurance in Morocco already), but having problems in entering Europe (Spain) for the reason that I may not be able to show a valid green card.

From your messages I may assume that taking the ferry from Ceuta might be best in that respect...
