Wow 100Euro is pretty good going. Do they charge per vehicle + extra for trailer regardless of passengers? Or it is per person?

Thanks.
Make sure you take some photos of the G-Wagen! I love those things! It's like a Defender only it doesn't leak...

Carlos news

Found this thread very helpful so am adding to it.

Yesterday I went on a recce to Algeciras and found the infamous Carlos and met the helpful daughter.

The office is NOT the small booth in Lidl car park which I initially thought is was. It's an established office with a sign saying something like 'Viajes Algeciras - Tanger - Cueta'. They are open 9am to 8pm.

Carlos's daughter has quoted me 250 euro return to Cueta, 180 euro return to Tanger for a VW campervan and 2 people. She said to call Carlos (and gave me his number) the day before or to come into the office as he could probably reduce that.

We then went to the port, ignored the touts and went straight to the long line of official operators. All were quoting 180 euro return for the slow ferry to Tanger, 194 euro for the fast ferry. Returns are open and last a year. All were offering ferries the same day. None was aggressive and all very helpful.

I plan to travel within the next week. I'll call Carlos or drop by Lidl but unless he reduces the price to 120 euro I'll probably take an official ticket just before I board.

Our main problem is finding a UK insurer to insure us. I've called several insurers mentioned in the VW mag, plus CIS, Comfort and others but as we are neither a motorhome (as don't have Corgi registered gas or running water on board) nor a car, it's proving tricky.

Yesterday's recce was in order to try and find out if we could be guaranteed to get it in Tanger. No one was able to advise at Algeciras port but several thought we should be able to buy it.

I feel uneasy boarding without knowing for sure that we can get it. Anyone have experience of this?

Insurance in Tanger

HI,I was over there early on this year, there are insurance booths just beyond the border customs control in Tanger:thumbup1:.Have a good trip.

famous_walker 9 Jan 2011 16:36

Any recent info on Algeciras-Ceuta ferry costs? Driving a landcruiser, planning to cross soonish.

Last time it was an open-date return bought from Carlos. Are the return tickets usually open date? My understanding also is that rates vary a lot depending on the season, so I'm wondering how much it is currently.

Great thread, great info;

"HI,I was over there early on this year, there are insurance booths just beyond the border customs control in Tanger"

*** Does this apply also in Tanger Med?

"The office is NOT the small booth in Lidl car park which I initially thought is was. It's an established office with a sign saying something like 'Viajes Algeciras - Tanger - Cueta'. They are open 9am to 8pm.

*** Good info, cheers.
".........unless he reduces the price to 120 euro"

*** Sorry, why if quoted for 180/194Euros would you expect to get a ticket for 120Euros? Have I missed something?

"I'll probably take an official ticket just before I board."
*** What's the difference?

"rates vary a lot depending on the season, so I'm wondering how much it is currently."
*** Search this forum or look at ferry websites i.e. aferry or contact Carlos.

" I love those things! It's like a Defender only it doesn't leak..."
*** LOL. Yeah, but I'd still have a Defender.

Happy travels everyone.

Any more up to date prices? Particlary for 4x4s?
Is budgeting 200Euros for a return still realistic?

Tim Cullis 11 Apr 2011 20:19

The rates go up and down like a yo-yo and there is a real suspicion there's a monopoly and price-fixing being exercised between ferry operators.

Check out what's being quoted on AFerry.com - Book Ferries to France, Ireland, Holland and all European ferry tickets and Viajes a Marruecos – Ferrys – FRS iberia

Then you know if you are being offered a reasonable deal.

priffe 11 Apr 2011 21:50

Purrhaps so I paid one way 4wd + driver €118 a month ago in the port. Fast ferry to Tanger Med. Websites like aferry.com was €117. Various agents in the port quoted the same price.
Thought I would be scientific about it for once so I went to Lidl but didn't find the guy.

James Rothwell 12 Apr 2011 10:31

I've just heard back from Carlos. I asked for prices in July.

He came back with (I had to use google translate) that current prices are €180 return which I am happy with, hopefully the prices will remain the same until my trip.

A couple of weeks ago, Carlos, Landcruiser over height 2 people to Tanger Med was 170 Euro return.

In Erfoud at the minute, first time in Morocco. Came via Algecirias/ Tangier avoided the touts and went to three differant ticket offices each gave the same price euro 201 for a bike and two persons, decided to walk away and came back for next ferry to a differant ticket office and was still charged the same. Dont think I have been ripped off as they all gave me the same price, any thoughts on the price, why so high. Crossing was very easy and getting out of Port was not really hard as a spanish couple explained what was happening, also once they saw the internet verion of the green import document they just walked of, have no doubt if I had not filled in the green form I would have been kept to last, still fill in the internet one take it with you and then you have everything to hand.
Love this country sitting in the bar of the Kasbah hotel listening to a group playing desert music on the drums. Everything I have read about this country is true, euro 50 for two persons with dinner and breakfast, free wifi and a parking attendant. Came through the Dades george as the sun was setting magical.

Ferry tickets

Hi Folks,

Been in Maroc for a few weeks. Ferry tickets from Carlos's daughter - 170euro for 4x4 & 2pax for Alg-Tanger Med open return.
It's been very windy everywhere for the last 2 weeks. Lots more tourists this week as Semana Santa begins.
Lots more Tarmac on the mountains, unfortunately but on the bright side
diesel's around 66p a litre!

Happy trails,

Jojo

Thanks, we're heading out there (first time) in about 2 weeks. Only prices we can find for comparison on the interweb (aFerry.com) are £346, £515, £88,991.94 (!!) for a Defender and 2 adults (crossing 14th May, return 1 month later).
Guess we'll try and find the infamous Carlos or just take our chances on the booths at the port when we arrive.
From the posts on various threads it seems the preference has switched back to Tangier from Cueta now that the new Tanger Port is up and running - is that the case or am I mis-reading it?

Spent the night at Bikershome a few days ago spoke with Peter, he told me the price goes up at holiday times, normally it would cost 120ish for a bike and rider but because of easter they put the price up. So moral of story is to go at off peak times.

tweetyduck 27 Apr 2011 14:31

@wearthefoxhat (and hopefully anyone else)

we've just been over in our defender and used the carlos ticket shop. We also travelled in a Land Rover and found got the same price as mentioned here. It was either E170 or E180 i can't remember. This is an open return but booked outbound departure.

To be honest i would bother going anywhere else unless they start upping the prices. Make sure you do the paperwork on the ferry and then follow everyone else when you get off. The insurance was i think about £6 per day and was never checked. (i can confirm this if you want) They only do set amounts of days. We got 10 but needed more.

Go to Tangiers MED and go empty. Theres a petrol station in the village down the road. Don't get on the motorway ! Use google earth to find the station before you go. Post again if you can't find it on google.

Getting through the port took about 30mins even though the CIN they issued me didn't work so i had to go to the other police booths to get it sorted. There is a change place next to the Insurance place. These are the little white booths in the middle of the tarmac expanse after the customs booths. Don't change much money as there is a cash machine in the main building in the back on the right. You can go there once you have passed customs and done your paperwork / insurance. There is parking outside the main building.
