Ferries between Tangier and Barcelona (also Genoa)

Another question for our gurus;

Can I ride up and get a ticket or have to prebook?
What type of time to sailing does one need to be at ferry office to get that days ticket?

I expect prebooking to be cheaper

Outward leg, I am taking the Tangier-Barcelona ferry
Return leg - Genoa-Tangier

I have checked the timetable on directferries.co.uk so have the sailing days and time.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

You can just go and by the ticket there. Specialy for the fast farry but also to genua i allways got my tickets a few hours before departure. I think they where leaving once a week...dont remember...i think tursday towards Genua or so then i took about two days + delay ;)

Greetings, Tobi

Last time we went the Barcelona was full several days before departure, but that was going from Barca. It is very popular, so I would recommend prebook.

When we were looking the costs varied for our 4x4 between £400 and twice that, single. They'd go up, down, sit still for a while, no pattern it seemed. We did end up paying a cheap rate, but we were fairly flexible and jumped when a cheap price came up.

It was also better to book direct rather than through Direct Ferries since £10 cancellation insurance was then available.

Bad weather on the Med meant it turned up in Barcelona about 8 hours late, so also arrived late in Tangier at about 11pm just as the insurance booth, money changers etc were all shutting up shop, and driving to the planned 1st stop would be in the dark.

I also thought there was only one company, one boat? So I didn't know there was a "fast ferry" choice?

Finding the correct unsignposted dock was interesting too :)

Have fun

:)

Thanks all

Am in Barcelona now

I took the autoroute into Tangiers, and followed the sign(s) that says - Tangier Med Port.

Got to the port and was able to get a ferry ticket same day to Barcelona (I arrived 1230 for the advertised 1600 ferry). I had to buy a ticket from the main? ticket office though at 200 Euro for a 4 berth cabin plus my bike.

A new question on this old thread...
I plan to take a ferry from Tanger-Med to Barcelona in the first days of April, can I just go and buy a ticket at the terminal or should I book in advance??
I'll just take a seat, no cabin...

I suggest you book in advance.

I left Tanger Med 10 days ago - I waited until the last day to book passage on the ferry from Tanger Med to Barcelona and then onwards to Genoa, but the day before departure, the ferry was already sold out for both trips.

The Spanish and French road tolls are oppressive, which is why that ferry, run by GNV (Eyetalyuns) is popular.

Did you get the ferry to Genoa in the end? What was the cost?

Who, me?

No, I did not. Wound up riding the bike from Algeciras to Zurich. The weather was amazingly good for the end of February... average high temp was 16° every day, even in CH.

The ride annoyed me, though - the friggin' Spanish and French road tolls are outrageous, and fuel ain't cheap either. For sure, it would have cost me the same or less to take the GNV ferry from Tanger Med to Genoa, then a short ride over the Alps to Zurich.

Having said that, though, the GNV ferry is no Love Boat. Last time I took it, the food was very expensive, and the crew had a habit of chaining up and padlocking exit doors to the various decks. If there ever was a fire or other need to evacuate that ship whilst underway, there would have been massive loss of life.
