Camping in Marocco

In marocco can you wild camp as you go or do you have to use recognised campsites??

Or is ot that you find a village and ask to cam withn them. If so I assume is customary to offer payment, how much is reasonable??

When we stop in towns and cities what sort of price are basic hotels??

I did camp wild a couple of times in the Atlas. It makes senses in some areas. Just use common sense; if you do it in a discrete respectful manner, it's perfectly acceptable.

Official campings are pretty basic and very cheap. If you find one when you stop by the end of the day, rest there. A shower, sometimes of hot water is a good idea after a good ride day.

Nice, gives me itchy feet....Earlier this year I paid between 70-100dh for cheap rooms. I think you could find cheaper, you can definitely pay much more.

I decided against camping because of the extra weight of everything, and there are plenty of places to stay. A good shower is really welcome after a day's dusty riding!

If you do try to stay in any villages, I SUSPECT you'll never get any peace from the local kids - they are everywhere and unfortunately have learned to come running at you with hands outstretched. Very happy and enthusiastic, but if you don't like that kinda thing you may not cope with camping in a village...

Went on my first Morroco trip per LR 90 in october last year.

Stayed in Fes on the camping (was guarded) ans was indeed basic.

Stayed the rest of the trip wild camping in remote spots, just see that you pick a spot between villages and not near helps also.....

Even in the desert on route from Tagounite to Merzouge (CS route) I woke up, only to find that there was already a herder waiting near the car trying to get food or something else.....

Stayed once in a riad (Riad Nezah in Merzouga) and was guarded also.

So wild cmaping can be done, but be smart and hide a little bit.

One night one person with hot shower is around 40 Dh although places like Fez and Marrakesh are more expensive at around 60-70 Dh for a night.

I have never stayed in one places for more than a night, but I guess you may get a discount if you're staying for a while at the same place.

I was in Morocco for going on a month in October, and took camping gear, stayed on some sites and some wild camping, but I won't bother next time. Accommodation is very cheap, so I ended up not camping for much of the time. As I was on a bike after a while I began to resent lugging all that gear around for no reason. Particularly irksome on a couple of Chris Scott's routes!
