I paid up and was then 'set free'... I will remember the bargaining techniques mentioned above next time I'm passing through
So it seems that it is something like a toll?

Suckered

HAHA, so good to see this thread. We have been caught by little and large a few days ago. Feel immensely better that we aren't the only ones. In the end we played the African waiting game. Sat down had some lunch/snacks for an hour and then got the 700dh/person down to 500 in total. Would have easily waited longer but the heat was killing us. Don't take them to seriously they are harmless

Beware of radar guns in Western Sahara. Especially close to towns/border. They are slowly increasing.

The "Stop" sign is exactly located at N28.44878 W11.11166.

In Feb this year a group mate did not stop but could escape the fine: he discussed a lot but it was his birthday, he showed his passport to the policemen and got away

Others were not so lucky ...

Haha,

We also got stopped there back in May 2011. They initially asked for 700 dirham. We played the whole game along, and in the end after about 30 minutes they let us go without any fine.

Sam (Niva Say Never) warned me that the Police also hang out on the N1 at

N28 37.425 W10 46.901

and low and behold they were there when I passed.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
