hi there.

i met a fellow biker. he is around 40yrs old and he had a tourist visa for 12 months. he told me he found a few jobs in farms a few time... easily. they paid him for about A$15-17 per hour.

i met a german biker. he's near 40years old and he worked as a mechnic in a shop. he say looking for a job is easy here in australia. he had a tourist visa.

i met another german backpacker here, he worked a carpenter and paid him about A$15/hr. he say looking for job is easy.

we went around for the past 3-4days, not many want to hire us.

is it because we are a couple? is it because i have not found the right one? even i visited a friend here, he had 7 companies (big hell business man here in queensland) and he didnt have a job for us!

dont tell me times are bad.

we are desprate for money now. drained alot of the money, due to the stolen bike before the trip. due to the broken engine in usa and we need to get out of australia fast to east timor and indonesia (because it's expensive here). and now we cannot go to the north because it's very bad weather now. we have to wait for 3-4 months for the better season to go up. meanwhile we need $$$ to survive!

other than seek.com.au, can anyone tell me how to find a job or anyone here had experience working as a tourist visa, can recommand us to the boss that u worked before.

we are desprate!!!

Its getting harder to find work if you dont have the correct visa - employers are liable for some large fines not only from immigration dept but also taxation and workers injury insurance. Maybe 1 in 500 small employers are prepared to take the risk. Larger companies will not even think about employing you without a tax file number. The fruit picking areas have had some well publiscised immigration sweeps and I dont think too many farmers will take the risk.

Its really only businesses that deal in cash (no EFTPOS, no cheques or credit cards) that can employ people without the correct visa - very few businesses dont take cards nowadays.

Bear in mind that if you work for cash you will be exploited - either paid well below what you should be, or when you leave you wont be paid at all.

You can volunteer to work for food and accomodation without hassles - weblookup "wwoof ing" = willing workers on organic farms.

You might find something on this site for casual work in exchange for accommodation which might tide you over till you move on.

If you can get up to Charters Towers (1 hour south west of Townsville) for the weekend from the 22nd to the 26th of Jan, there is a huge cricket carnival on, called the Goldfield Ashes. I'm sure with the influx of people, the pubs might be happy to pay cash for a helping hand. I'd call some first before making the trip though :)

I also feel that the further north you go into QLD, the less people will worry about the tax man. It is wet season up there, but you can make it to Townsville and Cairns very easily. If you head west from there past the Gulf of Capentaria though, expect closed and impassible roads. But if you stick to the coast, you could reach Cape York with ease, and also find lots of towns along the way that might have some labouring jobs on the go.

1) my concern is how come the 2 travelers i met did not have a proper visa and yet they found job easily?! or u can say that it's my problem of approaching...but, if there's a job, there is.
2) i met a lady using wwoof. the experience she told me is terrible. she had to travel to the bush, work long hours at some farms. bad accomadation. sometimes afterworking, she had to cook for herself and the employer. one time one of the employer tried to molest her. these wwoof treat travelers badly. then i went to stay with a friend that is also a host of wwoof. nice food they made for us but my tent would be much comfortable than their lodging. work is long and tough, yet not get paid so it's a waste of time doing this while we are RTW.

i strongly do not suggest WWOOF unless bike breaks down, need a place to wait for part to arrive, THEN WWOOF is a good solution!

i surf the web and happen to know that some backpacker hostel do arrange farm work and transport. so i sent them enquiry. they replied:

their reply few hours later was (i deleted the original email from them) that they will not start looking for jobs for me until i have paid 2 weeks rent with them. if they can't find any job within the 1st week, they will refund the 2nd week's rent.

I don't know if I quite understand this. There are always people around who'll tell you how easily they found work. But times are hard everywhere, and it's not clear you're offering anything that legal workers aren't also offering....at vastly decreased risk to the employer. You need to focus on what you have to offer that makes you a good hire.

You're coming across here as if you feel totally entitled to work on your own terms for good wages....and you sound resentful that it's not working out. That won't help. Maybe you don't come across quite so stridently in person, but it'd be worth thinking about this, and maybe finding someone who can offer you truthful feedback. If you're presenting an inflated sense of entitlement, no one's going to hire you; why should they? The world doesn't owe you a RTW trip.

Lots of people like WWOOFing. Others find it exploitative. I've never done it, but I've spoken to the owners of places using WWOOF-ers, and they generally complain about their workers, who might be enthusiastic at first but often bring no skills, therefore need training, and quickly loose motivation. Again, the real question is what do you have to offer those who might hire you, not the reverse.

i have heard bad things about these agencies that say they will sort you out with work and accomodation too- they wont let you stay anywhere else but with them and then charge loads for rent so you dont save anything. and the work often dries up. a few people we know are working on the gold coats now, after 6 months on a farm out by townsville, right out in the sticks. they had working visas though so i am not sure if they take tourist visa people. they found that by themselves not through an agency, having tried the agency and not got along too well.

we are heading there soon too so have been asking people on route how they have fared. up north sounds a better bet. and theres a harvest trail that everyone does, taking you from farm to farm following the seasons. the australia government site will give you the info for it. they may well take non working holiday workers too, but maybe not pay them as much. you would have to check this out though, maybe call a couple of them.

i have some friends who have been working there picking peaches i thinki, who were on 15aud an hour, no working visa. they made good money because there were enough hours too, but they were down nr sydney.

there is lots of job now in north victoria. about $13/hr. doing fruit picking. lodging and food not included. call me at +61402283777.

If you need money and want to save, then go to Broom on the north west coast. The pearl farms need people all the time to clean the pearl shells.

When I was passing through, they offered $1000/week for two weeks straight, then one week off.

They take backpackers so you should have no problems. It is hard work and for two weeks you are offshore on a floating workshop 3kms from land, so nowhere to spend :)

This is not seasonal work, it is year round.

I don't live in Oz but I've been planning a trip there for quite some time now. Australia being a backpacker heaven with the working holiday program...you might find it hard to find work for a few months as they all do the same thing as you but 'legally' (with the proper visa). If you don't mind hard fruitpicking work, the harvest trail website is loaded with info as far as when and where to go for jobs:

Also, if you go that route keep in mind that some fruits are harder work than others! Don't get your hope down...good things come to those who wait right? :)
