Hey

I'm on a temporary basis living in Tehran(work) and planning to take a ride home to Norway next spring(may 2009).

OK, ...and then I need a bike.

As you all may know, the revolution back in 1979 left this country filled up with US stuff. Among this left over from "uncle sam" , there was a huge number of Harleys. Today(2008) it is not allowed to use them in Tehran. Limit is 200 ccm. What I have heard, is that there is a lot of bikes in excellent condition from year 1976-78 hidden in garages arround the sity.

If anyone know anything that may lead me into a acceptable item, than be free to post or PM me.

An alternative may be Turkey or Aserbadjan to pick up a bike.

That sounds interesting! Bargain hunting for an old Harley in Tehran... all part of the adventure (I wish I had thought of that when I was there). But, if you want a real adventure, just buy a used Chinese 250 like the kind the couriers ride. I've seen one loaded up with 14 full sized truck tires. No. Seriously. Sure, the ride will be long and you'll break down daily, but what a story!

Well, a story it will be, thats for sure, but 250 ccm, ....no, not this time.
Had some offer on a Harley Elct. but price is all time high. $ 15.000.- 78 model. No chance.... Do not get it..there is absolutely no buyers except foreigners like me, there must be 1000 of them out there. I.e. also got info about a Honda Goldwing 1000ccm, blue..price $ 2000....that's more like it

You can find desired bike easily in Turkiye without problem. Only it will cost you more than Iran if you can find the same there ;-)

Harleys, BMW enduros and more is easy to find here especially in Istanbul.

hi,

even if you find and buy a bike in Turkiye, you cant register it unless you have resident permit. i called Turkish Costoms authorities for another traveller from HUBB and got this info. However, if you are holding EU passport you can buy and register a bike in Grecee, as Grecee is a member of EU.

Such an interesting coincident!!
Years and years ago , i mean in early 90s i used to work in a MotorCycle repair shop in Shiraz, south of Iran. Our shop main specialty was Harley. Actually these harleies were Police bikes which somehow our boss has got this contract with the police department to fix their bikes when they needed.
That was an amazing expeience to see a harley comes in and we all were excited and hoping to be the one that get to get a ride with the boss on the bike. Bikes were awesome but there were not that many original parts left in stock to replace , so some of them would have to decommissioned and police would sell them or leave them in their parking lot to ... perhaps rust away. Their older parking place was right next to Arge Karimkhani which you could see al those nice Haleyies are parked , but later on the parking place was removed from there and i never figured where they now keeping the bikes.
Anyways, irrespective of all of that what i vaguely remember is that even back then there were folks from Greece who would come to Iran and buy these bikes to took them to Europe. I dont know maybe the bikes were kind of special or they were buying them so cheapp...anyways.
I dont know if there is any bikes left in Iran , but i can give you the address of my old bike shop that i used to work. It is about 18 years that i have not been there , yet you might want to try to see if you can connect with them, although they might not even be there anymore!
The name of shop owner was Hussein. I dont know what was his last name (sorry for my bam memory). And the shop is at Darvaze Saadi. If you can call the 118 in shiraz they would give you the new telephone ..etc

If you had hard time finding the place, you can email me and i will ask my folks back home to see if they can find more info.

But overall i think all what you need is to ask the bike stores in your vicinity and i am sure after some time you will find a good harley. One other thing that you will perhaps find is the 750cc Honda's of mid 70s that were more abundant that Harley. for sure finding one is not hard in tehran, you might have to pay 500 to 1000 bucks for one a good one, but you are gonna get a piece of history with you back home.

hey, coincident is a matter of fact what this is about. I'm going to Shiraz for a trip end january(planned) so i might start in your direction.

Further, you are right, Honda's are not a problem and this may be a path to go in the end. Regarding the history, it mean something, so history will be a bonus, .....if it is a good one.


Collegue tok a Jaguar home last month(sea transport) and this had a pre- revolution history witch told that this was a gift to a General in Esfahan given by the Shaen.

Correct, same for Iran, but I have the work residental permit here so I'm more like an Iranian now...until end 2009. Further, I'm from Norway and not holding EU passport. Will also apply for driver lisence here in January.

A problem we are facing right now, is the legislation of not beeing able to drive in the large towns with larger bikes than 200 ccm. This is bad news, for us it is important to start the trip from our office garrage, burning up the street and head for Norway...must have this feeling

what you can do is, ride couple of km out of you garrage, hire a van and carry the bikes to Turkish border.. this is only idea that i have at the moment.
